Television: A Parenting Gift - Or a Curse? - Wakefield, MA Patch

Holly DeSouzaMy daughter is an only child. As much as I would love to have the time to occupy her 24/7, it is not feasible. Although there are days I feel I am more of a social director for the under 4’ tall crowd, I do have other responsibilities outside of playing Barbies or dress up or veterinarian to a group of constantly sick and quickly recovering stuffed animals. Because there is no one else actually breathing who is here during the days to play with her, Lexi sometimes gets bored and lonely. And, because I am not going to have another baby simply to give my daughter a constant play date, I need to give her something to occupy her and keep her engaged in the times I can’t be.

by Lydia Harris on September 14, 2011 | Leave a Comment

According to Us Magazine, Cameron Diaz and her boyfriend, Alex Rodriguez have gone their separate ways!

A source close to A-Rod said, “They broke up recently.”

So what on Earth could keep these two apart? Apparently, Cameron wanted to focus on her career. Sounds like the reason Bradley Cooper tossed Renee Zellweger to the side… Perhaps he and Cameron should get together? Then they could have adorable blonde-haired, blue eyed babies with giant lips…Ha.

Dates Bradley Cooper

Jennifer doesn’t date regular people: If you want to wine and dine Jenny from the Block you have to be B+ list at the very least. Now that she’s single again, La Lopez is free to go on a candlelit dinner with Bradley Cooper at New York’s Per Se .It’s the kind of warm, intimate place where you can really get to know someone after you’ve notified the paparazzi.   ( Jezebe l tells us an average bill there is just under $900.)

Hookups, Breakups & Babies - September 12, 2011 - Jennifer Lopez - Zimbio

Getty Images, Pacific Coast News

Here's the scoop on the juiciest relationship news in Hollywood this week:

Hookups:

- Has Lady Gaga been sneaking around with a vampire? The singer cast Vampire Diaries star Taylor Kinney in her "Yoü and I" music video, and now word has it they are "hooking up" in real life. They met in July on the set of the video in Nebraska, and the two were then spotted "hanging out" (and making out) in California over Labor Day weekend. While these stars could very well be getting hot and heavy, we'd like to point out that no one really knows when/if Mother Monster broke up with her bartender beau Luc Carl.

HIGHWAYS, FAA COMBINED; GOP DEBATE TONIGHT; DEMS PANICKING IN NY-9; GOP RETHINKS APPROACH TO POTUS JOBS; TRIVIA - POLITICO Huddle - POLITICO.com

(with assists from Jake "Fast Break" Sherman and Kevin Robillard)

LEGISLATIVE EXPRESSWAY: FAA, HIGHWAY EXTENSIONS COMBINED -- Huddle told you on Friday that House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman John Mica was going to introduce a Federal Aviation Administration extension that would last into December. We swear it was good information at the time. Since then, a deal was struck to combine a "clean" FAA extension through January with a six-month highway bill. Here's how I wrote about it late Friday night when the new two-part bill: "The bill would authorize programs of the Federal Aviation Administration through January and surface transportation laws through March. Highway programs would be funded at the fiscal 2011 rate — $41.7 billion — far above the $27 billion approved in their budget earlier this year. Because the extension is for six months and not a full year, the actual amount authorized is half of the fiscal 2011 level. The FAA would get about $5.4 billion for the four-month period beginning in October and ending Jan. 31. ... The higher funding level for highway programs may cause heartburn with House and Senate conservatives ... The legislation does not include retroactive pay for FAA workers who were furloughed." http://politi.co/nljdzP

It`s a Long Hard Road out of Hell

This is probably one of the more difficult pieces of prose I have had to write for Vital. Most of you dear readers will fall into two categories. The first, and vast majority, won`t know nor care of my feelings for Yeovil Town. The second, a motley few, know that I don`t like them very much. So this will be an exercise in restraint. You can admire me later, if I can make it through.

Limitless Movie Review - MoviesOnline

I don’t know if I could give any one sentence review of LIMITLESS that would be more telling than- LIMITLESS is somewhat limited in its ability to achieve and stay a worthwhile and compelling thriller. I enjoyed more than half of the movie- but the remaining half of LIMITLESS was shaky at best. The filmmakers seemed intent on trying to make a couple different types of movies which ultimately harmed my overall perception of the film.

Ethan Checks Out Some Heavy Metal Boxing on the Set of 'Real Steel'

Stepping foot into a century old factory that once pumped out Model T cars, normally I'd feel like a troublemaker sneaking around abandoned buildings trying to pass the time. But in this case, we're walking onto the gritty, expansive set of Real Steel , an ambitious new film from executive producer Steven Spielberg and director Shawn Levy ( Night at the Museum ) starring Hugh Jackman and a whole slew of robots smashing each other to pieces in the boxing ring. On this particular day we're watching an unruly crowd in the underground robot boxing circuit cheering on a brutal fight between Midas and Noisy Boy.

Cooper has been working as an actor for some time, but 2011 was undoubtedly his breakthrough year. Criterion Files #76: ‘Brief Encounter’ Tells a Story About Stories That Can’t Be Told

Criterion Files By Landon Palmer on September 7, 2011 | Comments (1)

The problem with cinephilia is that eventually one feels that they begin to run out of ‘essential’ films to see. The act of watching movies is continually a process of discovery, but as one continues to watch films not as a hobby but as a part of their life-blood, it becomes harder to find individual titles that are revelatory and profound, movies that shape an alter not only your conception of cinema, but art and life as well.

Tabletop Review: Call of Cthulhu: Red Eye of Azathoth

by Alex Lucard - September 7, 2011 | Email the author

Get it Here: NOWHERE (as of the date of publication)

Red Eye of Azathoth is the first Call of Cthulhu adventure release by Open Design, which usually sticks to Pathfinder or their magazine, Kobold Quarterly . Red Eye of Azathoth is an especially odd duck as it’s been in the works for over two years with Call of Cthulhu and Open Design fans alike wondering when it would be released. I received an email in early August about my review copy, but then when I clicked on the link to receive it, it would not allow me to download the PDF until August 31st. I happily did so the moment it became available because as you’ve probably noticed, Call of Cthulhu is one of my big three tabletop games. Unfortunately for those of you reading this, the PDF was pulled shortly after I downloaded for unknown reasons and it has not resurfaced with a new release date. Even the official website for Open Design lists it as “June 2011″ but still has it in a pre-order state. Troll & Toad, a major online tabletop shopping website had a date of September 6th and still elsewhere I’ve seen September 13th and September 19th. So who really know WHEN this is actually coming out? This makes this review of Red Eye of Azathoth a bit odd simply because I have the physical product but none of the information that helps you, the potential purchaser, get it.

Interactive flexible displays meet aesthetic design demands

By: Ian Crosby, sales and marketing director, Zytronic

Digital displays are everywhere, from consumer electronics and industrial terminals to retail kiosks and digital signage. The falling cost of TFT-LCDs and other displays have enabled many innovative applications, but designers are pushing beyond the restrictions of flat, 4:3 or 16:9 rectangular form factors. New technologies permitting custom display sizes, curved surfaces and even flexible displays are opening new creative avenues. Taking the next step by adding interactive capabilities, however, is more problematic due to limitations which exist with most touchscreen technologies.

REAL STEEL Set Visit and Video Blog Recap

If you’ve been reading the site for the past two years, you know we’ve been following Real Steel since its inception.  When the movie was first announced, I was one of many who thought that director Shawn Levy making a robot boxing movie sounded like a really stupid idea.  After all, the guy who made Pink Panther and the Night at the Museum movies taking on robot boxing?  Um…no thanks.  However, after visiting the set in June of 2010 and the editing room last December, I’m convinced Real Steel is going to be one of the surprises of 2011.

Expert views on Underground Toys - Telegraph

Companies in this position also need to look at the viability of each product. If the price point can’t be moved, and costs are rising, at some stage you need to call a halt. A sensible discussion with the customer about discontinuing a product line may help them to reconsider target pricing.

Red-carpet review: Best of Venice so far?

It's only been a few days but it feels like we've seen a month's worth of fashions at the Venice Film Festival. Maybe it's because all the stars show up for a photocall to promote their latest movie and then return a few hours later for the red-carpet action. One dictates a little more casual style, while the other is total glam.

He shared a touching story of how last summer he'd taken his daughter to Silverwood but was unable to accompany her on the roller coaster due to his size. He promised her that day that he could do something about his weight and would. And that this summer they'd take that roller coaster ride together. A promise made is a debt unpaid, he said.

New book disputes claim Jefferson fathered children of slave Hemings - Washington Times

In a book due out Thursday, eminent scholars say it’s unlikely that Thomas Jefferson fathered Sally Hemings‘ children, disputing a decade’s worth of conventional wisdom that the author of the Declaration of Independence sired offspring with one of his slaves.

The debate has ensnared historians for years, and many thought the issue was settled when DNA testing in the late 1990s confirmed that a Jefferson male fathered Hemings‘ youngest son, Eston. But, with one lone dissenter, the panel of 13 scholars doubted the claim and said the evidence points instead to Jefferson’s brother Randolph as the father.

Reasons to be Hopeful About "Man of Steel" (2013)

In response to all the negativity and captious rhetoric surrounding Zach Snyder’s newest Superman offering on some of the discussion boards, I proffer this brief list so that Superman and film fans alike may take heart.

- First of all, there is a Superman movie being made!!!

- Christopher Nolan is involved. This of course does not guarantee anything in regard to story or story-quality, but Nolan is a good filmmaker and his record stands for itself. And - - if nothing else - - Nolan’s clout with WB will ensure that the studio will not mangle the final cut of this film. Nolan is also a cerebral director by his nature, and his involvement in this film should indicate something about “Man of Steel” will bring with it an interesting and new take on Superman.

Podcast: Episode 33

writing the podcast post without having actually been there when it was recorded. As I was sadly in London on Thursday, I missed the podcast recording. Hosting duties passed over to Lewis, who is somehow more mature than Peter, and our very own Dan Lee did an admirable job of filling the extra space, particularly when it comes to imparting important knowledge about the Step Up series. He probably talked about games a bit as well, but it was the Step Up info that really drew my attention.

Madonna gets ready to cause a commotion in Venice

It seems strange to say, but Madonna may be struggling to find her voice. The singer's latest attempt to reinvent herself as a movie director has met with raised eyebrows and a certain amount of scepticism ahead of the world premier of her new film, W.E., at the Venice Film Festival.

We have been on this territory before. Her first foray into film-making was Filth and Wisdom, starring Gogol Bordello's lead singer, Eugene Hütz. The film premiered at the Berlin Film Festival in 2008 and received mixed reviews, commonly along the lines of "not as bad as we were expecting from the star of Swept Away".

Interview: Joshua Oppenheimer Talks Conan the Barbarian and Voltron Script | Shockya.com

Since his inception almost eight decades ago, the character of Conan the Barbarian has inspired countless different stories spanning across all manner of media, so it’s not really a surprise that the new Lionsgate big screen re-boot of the “Conan” film series would involve more than one writer. While Sean Hood polished up the production draft and worked with director Marcus Nispel, Joshua Oppenheimer, along with his writing partner Thomas Dean Donnelly, crafted the original framework of the story, and retains screenplay credit. Recently, ShockYa had a chance to speak to the screenwriter one-on-one, about the enduring appeal of the character of Conan, the absolute necessity of thick skin when working as a Hollywood screenwriter, and the state of one of his next big projects, the script for “Voltron.” The conversation is excerpted below:

Two, this album's bombast sits outside of the nation's zeitgeist, particularly given the nation's political and economic turmoil of the last few weeks.

Sometimes, an hour and 45 minutes just isn’t enough time.

The real reason hypochondriacs drive doctors crazy

They're the butt of jokes on TV, but these patients have serious problems that our healthcare system can't handle Video

Hypochondriacs often provide comic relief in TV and film (see stubbornly bedridden Cameron at the beginning of "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" or Melman the anxious pill-popping giraffe in "Madagascar"). The doctor-patient relationship itself is also played for laughs: "Scrubs," for instance, featured a recurring character named Harvey Corman whom an irritated Dr. Cox greets in one episode with his incurable bite: "And what imaginary disease is ailing you this time, my friend?" For a physician, these sorts of patients are frustrating to deal with, but not because their problem is a joke.

Reviews: LIMITLESS UK BluRay review

It's rare to see a film fumble its premise as badly as Neil Burger's Limitless. What starts as a slick, darkly ambiguous thriller with some wonderfully inventive visuals hits a tipping point once you realise Burger and his crew aren't interested in character development or getting their audience to think. This is Hollywood formula dressed up in a hastily-constructed moral dilemma that goes absolutely nowhere by the end, further hamstrung by the lack of a truly charismatic leading man and a pointless romantic subplot.

Wilmington on Movies: Rise of the Planet of the Apes

Rise of the Planet of the Apes , latest chapter in an old franchise, shows us a story we too easily forget, or maybe one that we never really knew: how it all began, how an imprisoned, persecuted and seemingly rag-tag army of CGI chimpanzees rose up, found their leader (our great hero Caesar), how they threw off their shackles, unlocked their cages, overcame their vicious keepers (including sneery Draco Malfoy, or Tom Felton himself), and then stormed through San Francisco, a unstoppable, swarming tide of apes unleashed. Yip!

I think that Bradley Cooper, known for his roles in The Hangover, The A-Team and Limitless would be a great fit for Bruce Wayne. He looks the part and he is a great actor. He is around the same age as Bale with an age difference of a year. I would be very happy if he was casted in the role if (sorry, when) Warner Bros reboot the franchise.

Movie Review: 'Apes' a first class prequel

'Rise of the Planet of the Apes" is first-class entertainment, packed with clever, unsettling and even inspired ideas. A well-crafted prequel to the long-running "Apes" series, it offers a few winks to fans of that cycle of films. Still, there's no background knowledge needed to appreciate this film's impressive accomplishments. It stands proudly on its own two feet, hardly ever dragging its knuckles.

Opposition to Natural Gas Fracking Heats Up

Public opposition to hydraulic fracturing is growing in the US and abroad as more people learn about the risks of the natural gas drilling process, known as "fracking."

New Jersey lawmakers have passed the nation's first statewide ban of the practice, which involves injecting water, sand and toxic chemicals deep underground to break up dense rock formations and release natural gas. There was strong bipartisan support for the ban - the state Senate voted 32-1 and the Assembly 56-11.

DVD Review: Source Code, Limitless, Soul Surfer, The Perfect Game and The Michael Palin Collection | Shockya.com

Science-fiction is often so terribly difficult to get right on screen because its makers get bogged down in minutiae, trying to craft expansive, futuristic and/or alien worlds, or over-explain the processes that differentiate and separate their plane of reality from that of the present day. “Source Code “, thankfully, is not one of those movies. It grooves, it pulses, it entertains — deftly balancing smarts with a streamlined aim to please.

Netflix vs. Redbox vs. the library: What's a film lover's best bet?

Having been a Netflix customer for almost ten years, I’ve enjoyed hundreds of DVDs starting out with their three-at-once rental plan, which was around $16 a month. Over the past couple of years, I’ve switched my plan a few times; once they started adding Blu-Ray discs into their catalog, I was all in. It seemed like a great plan to start renting as many Blu-Rays as I could (with an additional $2 fee added on for Blu-Ray access). It made renting some of the newer releases—without having to purchase them at retail stores for prices anywhere between $15-$30—much easier.

Source Code and the return of intelligent sci-fi to the multiplex

We celebrate the imminent DVD and Blu-ray release of Duncan Jones’ Source Code, a recent example of a film that marries intelligent sci-fi with big-screen spectacle...

Science fiction has been an important genre in filmmaking since its earliest days. Georges Méliès' A Trip To The Moon was one of the earliest and most pioneering, and marked the beginning of a long relationship between the genre of possibility and the moving image.

On y reviendra. DVD Review - Limitless (2011)

Directed by Neil Burger.

Starring Bradley Cooper, Robert De Niro, Abbie Cornish, Anna Friel and Johnny Whitworth.

SYNOPSIS:

A writer takes an experimental mind-enhancing 'smart drug', attracting the attention of shadowy forces determined to use his newfound abilities for their own gain.

Is it possible to be a genius in an age when anyone can Google anything or ask their very own digital Jeeves? It’s been hundreds of years since famous intellectuals could simultaneously be true experts in fields as varied as mathematics and music, philosophy or physics. Today the depth of knowledge required is just too great. It’s a question of knowing how to look for facts, rather than deducing your own. And yet we are constantly told to reach out for our true potential because biologically at least we are using a fraction of the brain’s thinking power.

Intriguing Limitless doesn’t maximize its potential

Limitless is your average junkie movie on, well, some kind of potent drug.

Eddie Morra (Bradley Cooper) is a down-in-the-dumps, failed writer who gets addicted to a new pill.

He becomes hooked and his life feels like a party, only to inevitably come crashing down.

The twist is the addictive element itself. NTZ-48 isn’t some random street drug.

Fillion’s Inception-Style Approach to Starring in Uncharted

The path Sony’s game Uncharted is taking toward being a feature film is a bit… well, you know. There’s not a map for that. Last year,  the film’s first director, David O. Russell, pulled Mark Wahlberg into the role of Drake. After Russell’s weird “family dynamic” angle proved unsatisfactory and Russell split, so did Wahlberg–leaving Uncharted without a director or lead. Meanwhile, Firefly/Serenity/Dr. Horrible/Castle fans have been rooting for Uncharted’s new director, Neil Burger, to pick up Nathan Fillion for the role of Drake, and according to an interview with ScreenRant the actor gave at Comic-Con over the weekend, he’s liking the idea… under certain conditions.

WILMINGTON ON DVDs: Potiche, Limitless

Potiche (Three Stars)France, Francois Ozon, 2010 (Music Box)

A few words about Potiche : Catherine Deneuve is still beautiful at 67. Gerard Depardieu , still tremendous at 62, has grown as immense as Brando (in girth as well as talent.) both still hold the screen casually and with real brilliance, though Depardieu, if he keeps this up, may soon burst the boundaries of even an IMAX screen.

Ten Childhood Icons That Should Be Made Into Movies

Every other weekend one studio or another announces yet another remake or reboot. Names never before associated with movie production--Marvel and Hasbro--now rule the summer marquees. Spiderman is being remadea scant four years after Tobey McGuire hung up the suit while two production houses vie for the Snow White enthusiasts and a feature length Captain Planet enters pre-production. Even beloved amusement park rides have been violated in Hollywood’s eternal quest for the instant hit. No comics, toys or books from our childhood are sacred. So before we are forced to live through the big screen adventure of “Row, row, row your boat,” we thought we’d put together a list of the ten childhood icons actually worthy of adaptation.

Should we be popping the "Limitless" pill?

The film's cognitive-enhancing drug isn't as far-fetched as it sounds. Embracing these meds may be a matter of time

The movie "Limitless," which came out on DVD last week, presents a potential future fueled by designer drugs. When we meet the film's protagonist Eddie Mora (Bradley Cooper), he's a divorced, disheveled, socially awkward writer who can't even come up with the first words of his novel. After getting dumped by his girlfriend, Mora runs into his drug-dealing ex-brother-in-law who offers Eddie a solution in the form of a little round pill. Within minutes, the drug transforms Eddie into a brilliant, creative, driven alpha male who quickly and effortlessly completes his long-stalled book.

It may surprise you to learn that dreamy-faced Chris Evans is not the first actor to don the mantle of Captain America. In fact, the idea that there would be Marvel movies from years past that are now virtually impossible to find is incredible given the fact that superhero movies are currently an industry exceeding Fortune 500 levels of profit and residing more comfortably in the “stupid huge” section of the NASDAQ index, So ask yourself this question, how bad would a Captain America movie have to be before the studio would completely bury it? Now multiple that answer by fourty-teen and you’ve got this film.

Limitless: a 21st century Faust

While Limitless is a slickly-made sci-fi drama starring Bradley Cooper, it’s also, Ryan writes, a Faustian tale for the modern age...

There are some stories that remain so powerful that, in spite of being told over and over again, they continue to resonate down the centuries. One such story is Faust , the German folk tale about an academic who sells his soul to the devil to quench his thirst for knowledge.

Neil Burger starting from scratch with Uncharted movie adaptation

Director and writer Neil Burger is skipping the work that David O. Russell began on the Uncharted film, and is starting over from square one. And yes, he knows all about Nathan Fillion.

Just a few months ago, fans of Uncharted were scratching their heads wondering how Mark Wahlberg, Robert De Niro, and Joe Pesci were going to bring the video game franchise to the big screen. From a wise-cracking treasure hunter to a globetrotting art merchant with a family that rubs elbows with the most powerful people on the planet, the character seemed to be moving further and further away from his origins.

ComicMix - Review: “Limitless”

What would you do if you could fully tap your brain’s capabilities? Every generation or so, the question is pondered, thanks to the latest breakthroughs or studies in neuroscience. It makes for an interesting discussion and sometimes, brilliant works such as Flowers for Algernon (the great book by Daniel Keyes, and Charly the movie with Cliff Robertson). The most recent addition to this sub-genre of fiction is The Dark Fields, a novel by Alan Glynn, which became the basis for the movie Limitless, which was released on DVD this week by Twentieth-Century Fox Home Entertainment.

In the prior blog, you read about how the hero of the Hollywood film, Limitless, cures his writer’s block with a new drug that stimulates his creative capabilities. Concurrent with the film’s opening, a related article about creative paralysis appeared in the New Yorker magazine.  Staff writer Dana Goodyear profiled Barry Michels, a real life therapist who treats blocked Hollywood screenwriters with his own unique methodology derived from the concepts of Jungian psychology.

WILMINGTON ON DVDs: Potiche, Limitless

, still tremendous at 62, has grown as immense as Brando (in girth as well as talent.) Both still hold the screen casually and with real brilliance, though Depardieu, if he keeps this up, may soon burst the boundaries of even an IMAX screen.

That’s the good and mixed news about director and co-writer Francois Ozon’s Potiche , in which Deneuve and Depardieu play ex-lovers who have aged into later-life roles: Deneuve as Mme. Pujol, the deeply intelligent but criminally wasted “potiche” (or trophy wife) of a wealthy factory owner, and Depardieu as M. Babin, the same city‘s Communist mayor, parliamentary representative and pro-labor firebrand.

Take Me Home Tonight DVD Review - CinemaBlend.com

Sometimes a journey isnÂ’t an epic adventure. Sometimes there are no fantastical landscapes, no Ringwraiths, no traversing forward one aching step at a time. Being in your twenties is a prime time for some sort of wild, wacky, easy, or difficult journey to help figure shit out. Some of us never take that chance. Others of us make KeroaucÂ’s On the Road our Bible. But any of us who have really figured anything out about ourselves did take those aching steps somewhere new and limitless. Even if, sometimes, that just means heading to a party in someone elseÂ’s backyard.

DVD Report: This week's new releases (July 17, 2011) - The Boston Globe

I admit it: As a writer and reviewer, I find that there are a couple of types of films that can always make me teeth-gnashingly envious. One is a movie with some showy bit of why-didn’t-we-think-of-that cleverness - like, say, imagining the world is a computer program, and offering that as the explanation for déjà vu and spoon bending. Another is a movie that portrays writing as effortless - the newbie hero hits nary a speed bump in becoming a literary sensation or breaking some huge story. Bradley Cooper stars in a combination of both in the addictively manic thriller “Limitless’’ (2011). Cooper plays Eddie Morra, a badly floundering novelist who starts popping an illegal brainpower-boosting drug and cranks out his next book in mere hours, then aims to conquer finance with scary Wall Streeter Robert De Niro. (The story is adapted from Irish author Alan Glynn’s book “The Dark Fields’’ - a writer filling pages by dreaming of a happy pill for writer’s block. Brilliant!) Cooper does surprising work alternating between unconfidently sketchy as a frustrated writer and “Hangover’’ smug as enhanced Eddie. (The actor’s scraggly “blocked’’ look feels like the male answer to Cameron Diaz’s “Being John Malkovich’’ frizz.) The movie also triggers “Fight Club’’ flashbacks with the different touches that director Neil Burger (“The Illusionist’’) employs to adrenalize the proceedings. Streetscapes telescope as hopped-up Eddie literally sees all the angles at once, and words drop from the air above his head as his prose flows. For this writer, it’s swell torture. Extras: Burger commentary; alternate ending. (Fox, $29.99; Blu-ray, $39.99)
