Rex Murphy: A perfect time to take stock of British monarchy | Full Comment | National Post

It has been trumpets and tapestry week on every television and front page of the planet. Up till Friday we were being almost consciously hectored into watching and reading of the “greatest wedding of the century.”

Well, it was a pleasant little march up the aisle. The throngs — how could they not? — showed up.

Through the lens of perception

DUBAI - At a time when anyone with a phone camera can hold their own as photographers, the artistic process of photography, from selecting subject matter to developing the film, seems outdated, if not almost mythical.

Yet, with the arts scene burgeoning in Dubai, many young photographers are going back to the basics with the medium, showcasing their talent at university-wide competitions and workshops.

Family filmgoer

-- “African Cats: This flawed Disney nature documentary, supposedly geared to family audiences, follows the lives of a few lions and cheetahs in the Masai Mara National Reserve in Southwestern Kenya for more than two years. The camerawork is intimate and beautiful, but the animal violence is far more intense than a G-rating implies, and parents of kids under 10 could be blindsided. The camera shows the capture or the fight, but cuts away before the kill; hurt animals may limp, but we don’t see injuries; when cats feed on carcasses, we don’t see the innards. The other issue is the embarrassing, overheated narration (voiced by Samuel L. Jackson), which shamelessly humanizes the creatures, turning their lives into melodrama.

Backed into a corner in Rio de Janeiro, a team of racers must pull one last job in order to gain their freedom.

The film focuses on a young lion cub named Mara being raised by his mother, Layla, a mother cheetah named Sita who is raising five newborns, and Fang, the leader of a pride defending his family from a banished lion. With so many species competing for space and food in the savanna, the animals must figure out the best way to survive.

Trilogy ends in delightful piece of sci-fi Accessible science, excellent characterization

CANADIAN sci-fi master Robert J. Sawyer's artificial-intelligence trilogy reaches its conclusion in another delightful piece of fiction.

The sequel to Wake and Watch, Wonder boasts lots of accessible scientific ideas and excellent characterization. Better yet, it's proudly and even defiantly set in Canada.

Limitless (English)

I know how Eddie Morra feels.

Like him, I know almost everything, but have forgotten most of it.

Limitless is about Eddie's adventures after his ex-brother-in-law gives him a pill that suddenly puts his entire brain online.

He finishes his novel at typing speed. He wins at poker, invests in the market, and runs it up to millions. He fascinates a woman who had rejected him as a loser. He knows intuitively how to handle situations that used to baffle him. He is hailed as the Wall Street guru of the age.

Dan Schrecker Q&A: Behind the Visual Effects in 'Black Swan' and 'Limitless' | PCWorld

Copyright 2010 Fox Searchlight Pictures. All rights reserved.Although they're very different films, the movies Black Swan and Limitless share a common theme: They're both about the radical transformation of their lead characters. They also share a common trait: Both feature extremely creative--and often subtle--visual effects to showcase that transformation.

Health board’s tobacco fight a losing battle | Dan Brown | Columnists | Comment | London Free Press

"There's a lot of unnecessary tobacco use in movies." So says Amy Yateman of the Middlesex-London Health Unit, by way of explaining the local agency's call for the provincial ratings board to crack down on the depiction of tobacco use in movies.

If the health unit has developed a standard for what constitutes "necessary" tobacco use in Hollywood productions, it's not clear. My wild guess is the folks there would object to any character who looks cool smoking, thus allegedly encouraging impressionable young people to take up the habit.
