Reasons to be Hopeful About "Man of Steel" (2013)

In response to all the negativity and captious rhetoric surrounding Zach Snyder’s newest Superman offering on some of the discussion boards, I proffer this brief list so that Superman and film fans alike may take heart.

- First of all, there is a Superman movie being made!!!

- Christopher Nolan is involved. This of course does not guarantee anything in regard to story or story-quality, but Nolan is a good filmmaker and his record stands for itself. And - - if nothing else - - Nolan’s clout with WB will ensure that the studio will not mangle the final cut of this film. Nolan is also a cerebral director by his nature, and his involvement in this film should indicate something about “Man of Steel” will bring with it an interesting and new take on Superman.

Podcast: Episode 33

writing the podcast post without having actually been there when it was recorded. As I was sadly in London on Thursday, I missed the podcast recording. Hosting duties passed over to Lewis, who is somehow more mature than Peter, and our very own Dan Lee did an admirable job of filling the extra space, particularly when it comes to imparting important knowledge about the Step Up series. He probably talked about games a bit as well, but it was the Step Up info that really drew my attention.

Madonna gets ready to cause a commotion in Venice

It seems strange to say, but Madonna may be struggling to find her voice. The singer's latest attempt to reinvent herself as a movie director has met with raised eyebrows and a certain amount of scepticism ahead of the world premier of her new film, W.E., at the Venice Film Festival.

We have been on this territory before. Her first foray into film-making was Filth and Wisdom, starring Gogol Bordello's lead singer, Eugene Hütz. The film premiered at the Berlin Film Festival in 2008 and received mixed reviews, commonly along the lines of "not as bad as we were expecting from the star of Swept Away".

Interview: Joshua Oppenheimer Talks Conan the Barbarian and Voltron Script | Shockya.com

Since his inception almost eight decades ago, the character of Conan the Barbarian has inspired countless different stories spanning across all manner of media, so it’s not really a surprise that the new Lionsgate big screen re-boot of the “Conan” film series would involve more than one writer. While Sean Hood polished up the production draft and worked with director Marcus Nispel, Joshua Oppenheimer, along with his writing partner Thomas Dean Donnelly, crafted the original framework of the story, and retains screenplay credit. Recently, ShockYa had a chance to speak to the screenwriter one-on-one, about the enduring appeal of the character of Conan, the absolute necessity of thick skin when working as a Hollywood screenwriter, and the state of one of his next big projects, the script for “Voltron.” The conversation is excerpted below:

Have no fear though; there are plenty of alternatives to the red envelope that will work out pretty well for you. Some of them could even end up saving you money.

The real reason hypochondriacs drive doctors crazy

They're the butt of jokes on TV, but these patients have serious problems that our healthcare system can't handle Video

Hypochondriacs often provide comic relief in TV and film (see stubbornly bedridden Cameron at the beginning of "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" or Melman the anxious pill-popping giraffe in "Madagascar"). The doctor-patient relationship itself is also played for laughs: "Scrubs," for instance, featured a recurring character named Harvey Corman whom an irritated Dr. Cox greets in one episode with his incurable bite: "And what imaginary disease is ailing you this time, my friend?" For a physician, these sorts of patients are frustrating to deal with, but not because their problem is a joke.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 4G LTE Review: Entertainment Options

The media experience on Android has been poor at best, especially on tablets. Phones are finally getting access to top apps, but as a whole, Android tablets are still lacking.

Imagine my surprise when I turned on the Galaxy Tab 10.1 from Verizon to find access to not one, but two places to get movies and TV shows. Thanks to the 4G connectivity, you can even download the shows while you are on the go.

Reviews: LIMITLESS UK BluRay review

It's rare to see a film fumble its premise as badly as Neil Burger's Limitless. What starts as a slick, darkly ambiguous thriller with some wonderfully inventive visuals hits a tipping point once you realise Burger and his crew aren't interested in character development or getting their audience to think. This is Hollywood formula dressed up in a hastily-constructed moral dilemma that goes absolutely nowhere by the end, further hamstrung by the lack of a truly charismatic leading man and a pointless romantic subplot.

Wilmington on Movies: Rise of the Planet of the Apes

Rise of the Planet of the Apes , latest chapter in an old franchise, shows us a story we too easily forget, or maybe one that we never really knew: how it all began, how an imprisoned, persecuted and seemingly rag-tag army of CGI chimpanzees rose up, found their leader (our great hero Caesar), how they threw off their shackles, unlocked their cages, overcame their vicious keepers (including sneery Draco Malfoy, or Tom Felton himself), and then stormed through San Francisco, a unstoppable, swarming tide of apes unleashed. Yip!

UPDATE! The Batman: Crime Rising Fancast by Jazzywazzy!

So for those of you that have been reading my ongoing take on the Batman story, I decided to compile a fancast of who I would like to see play the characters in my story! Here we go! UPDATED with two different actor choices and an extra character!

I think that Bradley Cooper, known for his roles in The Hangover, The A-Team and Limitless would be a great fit for Bruce Wayne. He looks the part and he is a great actor. He is around the same age as Bale with an age difference of a year. I would be very happy if he was casted in the role if (sorry, when) Warner Bros reboot the franchise.

Movie Review: 'Apes' a first class prequel

'Rise of the Planet of the Apes" is first-class entertainment, packed with clever, unsettling and even inspired ideas. A well-crafted prequel to the long-running "Apes" series, it offers a few winks to fans of that cycle of films. Still, there's no background knowledge needed to appreciate this film's impressive accomplishments. It stands proudly on its own two feet, hardly ever dragging its knuckles.

"ANOTHER EARTH"           HHH           1/2                     (PG-13). CineArts Sequoia A new planet four times the size of the moon, appears in the sky of Earth. Searching for it out her car window, a young woman (Brit Marling) causes a car crash, killing a mother and child and sending the father (William Mapother) into a coma. After he emerges from the coma, she contrives to work as his housecleaner, and they develop a fragile relationship without him realizing who she is. The presence of Earth 2 in the sky suggests alternative lifelines we could have lived. Marling makes an impressive debut, and the film is thought-provoking. 92 minutes

Opposition to Natural Gas Fracking Heats Up

Public opposition to hydraulic fracturing is growing in the US and abroad as more people learn about the risks of the natural gas drilling process, known as "fracking."

New Jersey lawmakers have passed the nation's first statewide ban of the practice, which involves injecting water, sand and toxic chemicals deep underground to break up dense rock formations and release natural gas. There was strong bipartisan support for the ban - the state Senate voted 32-1 and the Assembly 56-11.

DVD Review: Source Code, Limitless, Soul Surfer, The Perfect Game and The Michael Palin Collection | Shockya.com

Science-fiction is often so terribly difficult to get right on screen because its makers get bogged down in minutiae, trying to craft expansive, futuristic and/or alien worlds, or over-explain the processes that differentiate and separate their plane of reality from that of the present day. “Source Code “, thankfully, is not one of those movies. It grooves, it pulses, it entertains — deftly balancing smarts with a streamlined aim to please.

Netflix vs. Redbox vs. the library: What's a film lover's best bet?

Having been a Netflix customer for almost ten years, I’ve enjoyed hundreds of DVDs starting out with their three-at-once rental plan, which was around $16 a month. Over the past couple of years, I’ve switched my plan a few times; once they started adding Blu-Ray discs into their catalog, I was all in. It seemed like a great plan to start renting as many Blu-Rays as I could (with an additional $2 fee added on for Blu-Ray access). It made renting some of the newer releases—without having to purchase them at retail stores for prices anywhere between $15-$30—much easier.

Source Code and the return of intelligent sci-fi to the multiplex

We celebrate the imminent DVD and Blu-ray release of Duncan Jones’ Source Code, a recent example of a film that marries intelligent sci-fi with big-screen spectacle...

Science fiction has been an important genre in filmmaking since its earliest days. Georges Méliès' A Trip To The Moon was one of the earliest and most pioneering, and marked the beginning of a long relationship between the genre of possibility and the moving image.

Great Escape: Back to the Future - Greenbelt, MD Patch

When I was casting around for fun things to do this past weekend, two of my friends suggested seeing Terry Gilliam’s "Time Bandits" (1981), which was showing at Silver Spring’s AFI Silver Theater and Cultural Center as part of its 1980s retrospective: "Totally Awesome 5: Great Films of the 1980s."

Paradiso perduto, Bradley Cooper:

On y reviendra. Le but, en tout cas, a été atteint: titiller l’imagination.

Robert De Niro & Bradley Cooper Eye Russell’s ‘Silver Linings Playbook’

‘Limitless’ co-stars Robert De Niro and Bradley Cooper could reunite for David O. Russell’s strange dramedy, ‘The Silver Linings Playbook’.

Scratch another potential Mark Wahlberg/David O. Russell reunion off the charts. It looks like the former won’t be re-teaming with his Fighter director on The Silver Linings Playbook , due to a scheduling conflict.

'Source Code' Hits No. 1 on DVD, Blu-ray Charts - The Hollywood Reporter

Summit Entertainment stormed to the top of the national home entertainment charts last week with Source Code, a PG-13-rated action thriller starring Jake Gyllenhaal that generated $54.7 million in theaters.

The film debuted at No. 1 on all three charts the week ending July 31, bumping previous triple-play chart-topper Rango, from Paramount, to No. 2 on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart, Nielsen’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart and Home Media Magazine’s rental chart.

Geoff Cox’s guide to new DVD releases (03.08.11)

IT’S hardly a return to his glory days, but Robert De Niro offers one of his better recent performances in LIMITLESS (15: Momentum).

He plays a ruthless tycoon in a punchy and witty thriller about a struggling writer, Eddie Morra (Bradley Cooper), transformed by an illicit drug from a man crippled by self-doubt into a world-beater.
