DVD Review - Limitless (2011)

Directed by Neil Burger.

Starring Bradley Cooper, Robert De Niro, Abbie Cornish, Anna Friel and Johnny Whitworth.

SYNOPSIS:

A writer takes an experimental mind-enhancing 'smart drug', attracting the attention of shadowy forces determined to use his newfound abilities for their own gain.

Is it possible to be a genius in an age when anyone can Google anything or ask their very own digital Jeeves? It’s been hundreds of years since famous intellectuals could simultaneously be true experts in fields as varied as mathematics and music, philosophy or physics. Today the depth of knowledge required is just too great. It’s a question of knowing how to look for facts, rather than deducing your own. And yet we are constantly told to reach out for our true potential because biologically at least we are using a fraction of the brain’s thinking power.

Intriguing Limitless doesn’t maximize its potential

Limitless is your average junkie movie on, well, some kind of potent drug.

Eddie Morra (Bradley Cooper) is a down-in-the-dumps, failed writer who gets addicted to a new pill.

He becomes hooked and his life feels like a party, only to inevitably come crashing down.

The twist is the addictive element itself. NTZ-48 isn’t some random street drug.

Fillion’s Inception-Style Approach to Starring in Uncharted

The path Sony’s game Uncharted is taking toward being a feature film is a bit… well, you know. There’s not a map for that. Last year,  the film’s first director, David O. Russell, pulled Mark Wahlberg into the role of Drake. After Russell’s weird “family dynamic” angle proved unsatisfactory and Russell split, so did Wahlberg–leaving Uncharted without a director or lead. Meanwhile, Firefly/Serenity/Dr. Horrible/Castle fans have been rooting for Uncharted’s new director, Neil Burger, to pick up Nathan Fillion for the role of Drake, and according to an interview with ScreenRant the actor gave at Comic-Con over the weekend, he’s liking the idea… under certain conditions.

WILMINGTON ON DVDs: Potiche, Limitless

Potiche (Three Stars)France, Francois Ozon, 2010 (Music Box)

A few words about Potiche : Catherine Deneuve is still beautiful at 67. Gerard Depardieu , still tremendous at 62, has grown as immense as Brando (in girth as well as talent.) both still hold the screen casually and with real brilliance, though Depardieu, if he keeps this up, may soon burst the boundaries of even an IMAX screen.

But, Apple shouldn't stop there, and the revolution shouldn't be limited to Apple, or even just to PCs for that matter. It's time for discs to die.

Ten Childhood Icons That Should Be Made Into Movies

Every other weekend one studio or another announces yet another remake or reboot. Names never before associated with movie production--Marvel and Hasbro--now rule the summer marquees. Spiderman is being remadea scant four years after Tobey McGuire hung up the suit while two production houses vie for the Snow White enthusiasts and a feature length Captain Planet enters pre-production. Even beloved amusement park rides have been violated in Hollywood’s eternal quest for the instant hit. No comics, toys or books from our childhood are sacred. So before we are forced to live through the big screen adventure of “Row, row, row your boat,” we thought we’d put together a list of the ten childhood icons actually worthy of adaptation.

Should we be popping the "Limitless" pill?

The film's cognitive-enhancing drug isn't as far-fetched as it sounds. Embracing these meds may be a matter of time

The movie "Limitless," which came out on DVD last week, presents a potential future fueled by designer drugs. When we meet the film's protagonist Eddie Mora (Bradley Cooper), he's a divorced, disheveled, socially awkward writer who can't even come up with the first words of his novel. After getting dumped by his girlfriend, Mora runs into his drug-dealing ex-brother-in-law who offers Eddie a solution in the form of a little round pill. Within minutes, the drug transforms Eddie into a brilliant, creative, driven alpha male who quickly and effortlessly completes his long-stalled book.

Amid the kookiness, Cage did promise fans the second Ghost Rider film - directed by Crank duo Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor - is a departure from the lighter tone of the first and closer to the comic book series.

It may surprise you to learn that dreamy-faced Chris Evans is not the first actor to don the mantle of Captain America. In fact, the idea that there would be Marvel movies from years past that are now virtually impossible to find is incredible given the fact that superhero movies are currently an industry exceeding Fortune 500 levels of profit and residing more comfortably in the “stupid huge” section of the NASDAQ index, So ask yourself this question, how bad would a Captain America movie have to be before the studio would completely bury it? Now multiple that answer by fourty-teen and you’ve got this film.

Limitless: a 21st century Faust

While Limitless is a slickly-made sci-fi drama starring Bradley Cooper, it’s also, Ryan writes, a Faustian tale for the modern age...

There are some stories that remain so powerful that, in spite of being told over and over again, they continue to resonate down the centuries. One such story is Faust , the German folk tale about an academic who sells his soul to the devil to quench his thirst for knowledge.

Neil Burger starting from scratch with Uncharted movie adaptation

Director and writer Neil Burger is skipping the work that David O. Russell began on the Uncharted film, and is starting over from square one. And yes, he knows all about Nathan Fillion.

Just a few months ago, fans of Uncharted were scratching their heads wondering how Mark Wahlberg, Robert De Niro, and Joe Pesci were going to bring the video game franchise to the big screen. From a wise-cracking treasure hunter to a globetrotting art merchant with a family that rubs elbows with the most powerful people on the planet, the character seemed to be moving further and further away from his origins.

ComicMix - Review: “Limitless”

What would you do if you could fully tap your brain’s capabilities? Every generation or so, the question is pondered, thanks to the latest breakthroughs or studies in neuroscience. It makes for an interesting discussion and sometimes, brilliant works such as Flowers for Algernon (the great book by Daniel Keyes, and Charly the movie with Cliff Robertson). The most recent addition to this sub-genre of fiction is The Dark Fields, a novel by Alan Glynn, which became the basis for the movie Limitless, which was released on DVD this week by Twentieth-Century Fox Home Entertainment.

DVD Report: This week's new releases (July 17, 2011) - The Boston Globe

I admit it: As a writer and reviewer, I find that there are a couple of types of films that can always make me teeth-gnashingly envious. One is a movie with some showy bit of why-didn’t-we-think-of-that cleverness - like, say, imagining the world is a computer program, and offering that as the explanation for déjà vu and spoon bending. Another is a movie that portrays writing as effortless - the newbie hero hits nary a speed bump in becoming a literary sensation or breaking some huge story. Bradley Cooper stars in a combination of both in the addictively manic thriller “Limitless’’ (2011). Cooper plays Eddie Morra, a badly floundering novelist who starts popping an illegal brainpower-boosting drug and cranks out his next book in mere hours, then aims to conquer finance with scary Wall Streeter Robert De Niro. (The story is adapted from Irish author Alan Glynn’s book “The Dark Fields’’ - a writer filling pages by dreaming of a happy pill for writer’s block. Brilliant!) Cooper does surprising work alternating between unconfidently sketchy as a frustrated writer and “Hangover’’ smug as enhanced Eddie. (The actor’s scraggly “blocked’’ look feels like the male answer to Cameron Diaz’s “Being John Malkovich’’ frizz.) The movie also triggers “Fight Club’’ flashbacks with the different touches that director Neil Burger (“The Illusionist’’) employs to adrenalize the proceedings. Streetscapes telescope as hopped-up Eddie literally sees all the angles at once, and words drop from the air above his head as his prose flows. For this writer, it’s swell torture. Extras: Burger commentary; alternate ending. (Fox, $29.99; Blu-ray, $39.99)

Can branded mobile apps make a comeback?

Remember Kraft's iFood Assistant? The meal planning/shopping assistant application was one of the first breakout hits in Apple's ( NASDAQ:AAPL ) App Store--launched in November 2008, iFood Assistant eschewed the free download approach common among consumer-branded apps, instead carrying a 99-cent price tag along with a wealth of recipes, how-to videos, coupons and related culinary-themed content. Consumers ate it up, and for a time, iFood Assistant even topped the App Store's Paid Apps list. But as a new Deloitte study points out, comparable success stories are few and far between: The Volkswagen Touareg Challenge and Audi A4 Driving Challenge racing games were hits in their time, but on the whole, only a small handful of mobile apps published by major consumer and healthcare brands have eclipsed the 1 million download milestone. Most fail badly: Eighty percent of branded apps under the Deloitte microscope failed to reach even 1,000 total downloads.

Writer’s Block: How to Break Through - Jerry Weissman - Presentations in Action - Forbes

Writer’s block is the proverbial stuff of legend and literature. The latest variation on the theme is Limitless, the Hollywood film starring Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro. In it, Mr. Cooper plays a down-and-out writer who beats his severe case of writer’s block with a new drug that not only jump starts his creative output, but gives him many other advanced mental capabilities. Of course, the story is fictional—A.O. Scott’s review of the film in the New York Times called it, “an energetic, enjoyably preposterous compound… a paranoid thriller blended with pseudo-neuro-science fiction and catalyzed by a jolting dose of satire”—but the situation is very real: writers do run dry.

During the U.S. Senate debate over the  PATRIOT Act renewal on May 24, Senator Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) told his fellow Senators: "There is secret law where, in effect, the interpretation of the law, as it stands today, is kept secret. So here we are, Senators on the floor, and we have colleagues of both political parties wanting to participate. Certainly, if you are an American, you are in Oregon or Colorado, you are listening in, you want to be part of this discussion. But yet the executive branch keeps secret how they are interpreting the law."

Tech zigzagging: on movies via Android Market, Netflix streaming and the trend away from unlimited data plans

As the trend away from all-you-can-eat Internet data continues, companies are rolling out or updating services that demand more and more bandwidth. GMSV first explored this issue last year (see Tech advances zig while access zags ), but now it is compounded by the fact that Verizon last week joined AT&T in moving further away from unlimited access. With the nation’s two largest wireless carriers now offering only tiered data plans to new subscribers, some, such as the Mercury News’ Troy Wolverton , worry about how this trend will affect innovation.

It's worth watching, however, for the comic chemistry between Russell Brand and Helen Mirren, who plays Arthur's faithful nanny. It loses its way a bit when it tries to go for more dramatic territory near the end, but Brand and Mirren are a delight nonetheless. On DVD and Blu-ray Friday.

Childhood Then vs. Now - Mansfield-Storrs, CT Patch

On Independence Day weekend we made our first trip of the summer to the Mansfield Drive-in. It’s become a staple of every summer since we first moved here a dozen years ago. Back then we were child-free so we actually stayed awake through the wee hours for the double feature. Years later when our son was a baby, we made a bed in the back of our CRV where he’d fall asleep before the first movie even started. It sure beat paying for a baby sitter. We were able to get away with that until he was four, when we spotted him peeking from behind the seat during the first 45 minutes of Indiana Jones. Since then, it’s been kid-friendly movies only.

Early Buzz: R.E.M., 'Robot Chicken,' Kindles and more news

Greetings! Today is kind of a big day on the blog, so stay tuned for some news.

As for last night, I attempted to watch the Bradley Cooper movie Limitless , but it just made me sleepy. Why doesn't that man just shave his face already?

Some headlines:

- The remastered version of R.E.M. 's Lifes Rich Pageant   is streaming .

Luther Star Ruth Wilson In Talks For Female Lead In The Lone Ranger

There are few better ways to break on to the film stage than by starring as the female lead in a Johnny Depp movie. Pretty much every movie he stars in finds a mass audience, either domestically or internationally. Basically, I have fantastic news if you are a British actress named Ruth Wilson.

Deadline has learned that Wilson, who stars as Alice Morgan on the Idris Elba television show Luther , is currently in talks to star alongside Armie Hammer - as the masked hero - and Depp - as his sidekick, Tonto - in Disney's The Lone Ranger . The film is set to be directed by original Pirates of the Caribbean helmer Gore Verbinski and is currently scheduled with a December 21, 2012 release date where it will compete with Peter Jackson's The Hobbit , Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained , Ang Lee's The Life Of Pi and, possibly, J.J. Abrams' Star Trek and Zack Snyder's Man of Steel . While details about the character are slim, it's known that Wilson will be playing a character named Rebecca. The actress won the role over two fairly big up-and-comers, including Tree of Life 's Jessica Chastain and Limitless ' Abbie Cornish.

Netflix raising prices as much as 60%

Video subscription service will no longer offer a $9.99 plan that lets users watch an unlimited number of movies online and rent one DVD at a time. Instead, those who want that combination will have to pay $15.98 a month.

Netflix Inc. , America's largest video subscription service, is hiking prices as much as 60% in a move that has sparked outrage among its customers but brought smiles to Hollywood studio executives.

Bradley Cooper stars in ‘Limitless’

Rated: PG-13 for thematic material involving a drug, violence including disturbing images, sexuality and language.

Better cogitating through chemistry—with a sizable downside. Cooper (switching back and forth from a pre-medicated state of hapless likability to his trademark mildly obnoxious cockiness) plays failed writer Eddie Mora, who’s given the chance to raise his brain power beyond calculation with an experimental drug called NZT. Unfortunately, NZT’s many dangerous side-effects include addiction, extended blackouts, brutal withdrawal symptoms, murderous gangsters, ruthless corporate manipulators and general paranoia. On the other hand, you do get to enjoy unlimited worldly success thanks to your clear-headed, confident, super-intelligence. That scenario gives “Limitless’’ a whiff, at least, of weighty moral/philosophical considerations (should we or shouldn’t we NZT?). Director Neil Burger (“The Lucky Ones,” “The Illusionist”) keeps things moving stylishly and extremely quickly (blink and you’ll miss something), emphasizing the wry humor of Eddie’s almost omni-present voice-over narration—while gradually upping the thrill quotient.

Al Futtaim FastFit offers fastest wheel alignment in UAE

FastFit, the name of Al Futtaim Motors’ new Express Tyre & Battery fitting centre, is apparently the UAE’s first company to install the fastest wheel aligner in the world, the 4D Master Aligner.

Located in Al Quoz area of Dubai, FastFit uses the 4D Master Aligner, which operates 50% faster than any other wheel-aligning machine in the current UAE market. The 4D Master aligner allows for the operation to be carried out via drive-through bays, while the actual 4D control unit is placed in another area within the workshop. The 4D Master is capable of “limitless assessment of vehicle angles at elevated levels, while automatically compensating the lift at identification of improper vehicle alignment.”

Bradley Cooper Movies Recut as Trailer for ‘Five Senses’ |

I’m not sure exactly what the fan-cut trailer for Five Senses is supposed to be. It re-purposes footage from Bradley Cooper movies like Limitless and Midnight Meat Train into a trailer for a similar but different project. Which is something that just about anyone could do, I suppose. But in this case, the edit is from Jaron Pitts, who was previously responsible for the well-received fan trailers for Green Lantern and Technotise. If you liked those, take a look at Five Senses, after the break.

I Want My VOD: July 2011

In this month's crop of VOD offerings, Charlie Hunnam makes a life or death decision, Ken Kesey and his merry pranksters go on a cross-country tour and Jay Baruchel makes the mistake of moving into Canada's worst apartment complex.

Clunky writing and flat-footed direction derail this initially intriguing exploration into both the power and limits of belief. Structured as a flashback-heavy mystery, writer/director Matthew Chapman's debut feature opens with a solitary man ( Sons of Anarchy 's Charlie Hunnam), stepping onto the ledge of a high-res building, poised to leap to his death when the clock on an adjacent building strikes noon. While he waits, a cop (Terrence Howard) ascends to the roof to try to talk him down. Instead, the jumper regales him with a tale of woe involving a beautiful, emotionally damaged woman (Liv Tyler), their lusty affair and her jealous, fundamentalist husband (Patrick Wilson) that has presented him with an impossible choice: sacrifice his life for hers or allow her to die while he lives. It's a great hook for a movie, but Chapman doesn't exploit it particularly well, allowing the inherent tension to dissipate amidst overwritten conversations and unnecessary subplots, like the cop's doubt over the paternity of his children. (This half-baked storyline feels like something that was specifically added to attract a bigger-name actor like Howard to an otherwise low-budget movie.) At least the movie offers a strong showcase for the perpetually underrated Hunnam, who delivers a compelling performance as the unbeliever that comes to understand the way religion can heal (as well as hurt) others. Hey Hollywood, be sure to remember this guy when Sons of Anarchy ends its run. (Available now via IFC on Demand. Also playing in limited theatrical release in select cities.)

Reviews: Cinemalaya 2011: THE DANCE OF TWO LEFT FEET Review

Ambiguity is such a beautiful thing. It is what makes art free from its artist, allowing the observer of the art part of the art-making. It is what breaks the boundaries of the literal, allowing art to traverse the infinite expanses of the subjective. It is what makes art from being only personal to the artist, to also being personal to the observer. A tear, for example, is ordinarily an object of sorrow. A tear from the eye of a man embracing another man has transformed it from being an object of sorrow into an object of love, suddenly realized. A tear from the eye of a man embracing another man in the end of a grandiose dance production of a famous epic has transformed it from being an object of love into an object of awe.

Uncharted movie still alive, will probably be awful

It's no secret that I'm an Uncharted fan. Several of my articles have been about the recently released beta, and how the multiplayer is shaping up in the new game. Because of my passion for the series, I naturally began following the status of the so called 'Uncharted Movie'. It's been a little crazy so far, but here is a very brief rundown of what has happened in this movies history.

Hollywood Hotel Partners with Cirque du Soleil for Latest Production

The Renaissance Hollywood Hotel & Spa is a proud partner of IRIS, the newest Cirque du Soleil performance that documents the evolution of the movie industry.

The movies have captured audiences since their early beginnings. The idea of bringing moving images to the big screen quickly evolved into one of the most expressive and versatile mediums of the modern age. Over time, directors, screen writers, actors and actresses expressed themselves in ways that the early pioneers of film could only dream of. The magic of cinema seems like a perfect match for the renowned Cirque du Soleil, which has dazzled audiences with seemingly superhuman acrobatic movements. The famed troupe’s latest production IRIS opens at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles on July 21, 2011. The Renaissance Hollywood Hotel & Spa is a proud partner of the production. This landmark Hollywood hotel is located adjacent the Kodak Theatre and offers luxurious accommodations, perfect for anyone wishing to see the new Cirque du Soleil resident show.

Complex show 'BLOOD FEATHER' makes ‘The Matrix’ look like the Muppets

The opening dance solos of “BLOOD FEATHER,” one of the latest pieces conceived by Wilmington resident Karola Lüttringhaus, are instantly absorbing and provocative.

Performed last May in Winston-Salem as a work-in-progress with the Salem College Dance Department, the dance begins as, one by one, the dancers enter the light. Women in muted beiges and grays perform short soliloquies of various psychological archetypes – the confident, the anxious, the seeker, the nurturer, the broken – bound to the ground, eager to take flight.

TV Carpio's moment to shine on Broadway

‘The Hobbit’ Dwarves Oin And Gloin Are Revealed In Today’s New Photo

Following yesterday's reveal of a trio of dwarves from "The Hobbit" comes a brand new photo today that showcases two more of the pint-sized heroes.

Yahoo! Movies has the first look at dwarves Oin (John Callen) and Gloin (Peter Hambleton) from the two-part "Lord of the Rings" prequel. Gloin is of particular note, since he's the father of Gimli, who fans know best as one of the fellowship of the ring in Peter Jackson's original trilogy. Check 'em out below:

Director David O Russell ( The Fighter ) left the project earlier this year over creative differences with Sony - he wanted to use the game’s basic premise and create an entirely different story for the film.

Now, Burger will both write and direct the film, with Variety reporting that “producers Avi Arad, Ari Arad, Charles Roven and Alex Gartner sparked to [Burger's ] new take” on the concept.

Education

Nations like Finland are getting better results by de-emphasizing exams. Why are we doing the opposite?

When I heard the news last week that the Department of Education is aiming to subject 4-year-olds to high-stakes testing, all I could do was shake my head in disbelief and despondently mutter a slightly altered riff off "The Big Lebowski's" Walter Sobchak.

Film Picks

As Woody Allen's latest film "Midnight in Paris" is charming audiences at several local theaters, Sunday evening Cinema Inc. at the Rialto is revisiting one of his earlier works. Notably it's not from his seminal run in the '70s and '80s. It's 1993's " Manhattan Murder Mystery ," which features Allen's reunion with his former flame/leading lady Diane Keaton.

The importance of dating a film

Assigning the year to which a film belongs affects how we think of it – but should we choose production or release date?

Time team ... For some critics, the date of The Maltese Falcon is 1946 not 1941. Photograph: John Springer Collection/Corbis

Let's try to push past the wordplay: how we date movies is serious business. Literary critics seem to rub along without having to write Twelfth Night (1602), but open any film book and you will find great thickets of brackets – Date Movie (2006) – mucking up otherwise perfectly respectable sentences. Moreover, the specificity these dates purport to offer is quite illusory.

SUCKER PUNCH Blu-ray Review

Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch hit theaters in March earlier this year, but it’s road to theaters felt like watching a train hit the emergency break. The year before it came out, the film wowed comic-con audiences, and Warner Brothers had set visits – Snyder was still seen as a wonder boy, even if Watchmen didn’t take it home. But by the week of release, Warners couldn’t hold it in the bag: Sucker Punch is a weird movie that doesn’t totally work for a number of reasons.

Now Olivia Wilde is Dating Chris Pine

Olivia Wilde continues to keep her dating life fresh -- Pine fresh, that is. The actress' latest boytoy is Captain Kirk actor Chris Pine, who seems to be joining a rather long list of conquests. So are these two a match made in sci-fi heaven?

While Chris won the coveted Star Trek role, Wilde has been trying to become fanboys' favorite Olivia (sorry, Ms. Munn) by starring in a slew of sci-fi movies, including Tron: Legacy , Cowboys & Aliens , and In Time (which sounds a bit like a Logan's Run remake). Before pining for Chris Pine, the recently divorced actress was rumored to be dating Ryan Gosling, and she's been linked to a number of her costars -- Ryan Reynolds from The Change Up , Justin Timberlake from In Time , and Bradley Cooper from The Words . So hopefully Chris Pine (who she stars with in Welcome to People ) isn't looking for something serious.

No Harry Potter for Indonesia

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — Indonesian moviegoers are facing a bleak year of second-rate foreign releases and lowbrow local productions as Hollywood studios, the government, and movie importers remain locked in a protracted standoff.

Do This for 10 Minutes on the Fourth of July

By Dennis Prager ( Archive ) · Saturday, July 2, 2011

Four years ago, I wrote a column titled "America Needs a July Fourth Seder." In it, I explained that "national memory dies without national ritual. And without a national memory, a nation dies." Many readers and listeners to my radio show responded by creating their own rituals to make the day far more meaningful than watching fireworks and eating hot dogs.

Good old Super 8: Hit movie revives nostalgia for the quirky '70s film format

PHILADELPHIA - It was the feeling of the film against your palm, and the cartridge spinning inside the camera, always running out too quickly, that made some filmmakers yearn for Super 8mm film in an age now dominated by digital.

The sci-fi mystery "Super 8" - which grossed $95 million in its first two weeks of release - is reminding many people of the film format popular in the 1970s, once used to shoot everything from back-yard birthdays to experimental films.

Scorsese's "Hugo Cabret" Now Just "Hugo"

Brian Selznick's "The Invention of Hugo Cabret" sold a mountain of copies, won a boatload of awards and attracted the attention of one of the greatest filmmakers ever. But as the story has moved from book to silver screen, the title has gotten progressively shortened to the point of now being totally generic.

A hit movie revives nostalgia for the quirky '70s film format. Crisp digital has largely replaced it, but its grainy images will last longer.
