Intriguing Limitless doesn’t maximize its potential

Limitless is your average junkie movie on, well, some kind of potent drug.

Eddie Morra (Bradley Cooper) is a down-in-the-dumps, failed writer who gets addicted to a new pill.

He becomes hooked and his life feels like a party, only to inevitably come crashing down.

The twist is the addictive element itself. NTZ-48 isn’t some random street drug.

Taking it doesn’t just give you a high, it allows you to tap into the full capacity of your brain.

Things you’ve forgotten about completely flood back when they’re needed, feeding your present intellect instantly.

It’s said the drug works better with someone smart, and in Eddie’s bloodstream he becomes a confident, smart, and witty guy that can’t do anything wrong.

Eddie bangs out a polished novel in a few days and decides he has bigger things to achieve.

Soon he’s taking the financial world by storm. Parts of the movie feel like Wall Street merged with a superhero flick.

It’s an interesting premise and the director, Neil Burger, makes it snap to life.

It’s fun, lively, and briskly paced. Even if it’s a well-told story, it’s never dull.

But Limitless never reaches its full potential. Stuck in the thriller confines, it staggers to a third act based on action and not ideas. It’s fun action, but the film feels like it’s cheating itself.

In an effort to achieve a mainstream feel it loses the promise of what it could have been: a brainy action film with something larger to say.
