Glee - the 3D concert movie

The stars of Glee: The 3D Concert Movie.

YES, you Gleeks can now sing along to the show’s catchiest tunes while watching your favourite characters bound across the stage with limitless energy in Glee: The 3-D Concert Movie.

The keyword in this movie title is concert. Don’t go to the theatre expecting the next chapter of Glee because, like the rest of us, you’ll be forced to wait until the start of season three. But if you’re desperate to relive the hit TV show’s lyrical legacy, don’t miss this. Admittedly, sitting in cushioned chairs and watching the Glee Club prance on stage before a packed auditorium of screaming fans feels a little odd.

Glee has formed a cult following of toe-tappers and warbler-wannabes after pumping out a whopping 22 episodes for each of its two seasons. Its die-hard fan base is hooked on the show’s two main ingredients: the show-stopping tunes and the saga of cute awkward romances in the hallways.

Although the musical tribute is a faithful replication of the show’s soundtrack, there are no allusions to the ongoing relationships and dynamics between the characters. Kurt sings a duet with Rachel (not Blaine), Rachel does not sing with Finn let alone gaze into his eyes and Brittany gyrates with a mostly male dance troupe to Britney Spears’ I’m a Slave 4 U with no hint of her stunted love for Santana. During a behind-the-scenes chat, Brittany says she’s so glad the movie is in 3D because her boobs look great. That seems to be the only justification for the movie’s 3D filming.

The one shocking revelation was when wheelchair-bound Artie leapt to his feet to breakdance to Safety Dance (Men Without Hats).

Oh, and at the risk of dashing your hopes, this staged performance is completely unsupervised. There are no teachers present - no Will Shuester (Matthew Morrison), Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) or Emma Pillsbury (Jayma Mays). The only teacher allowed a cameo was Gwyneth Paltrow who induced a collective eye roll while she crooned Cee Lo Green’s Forget You.

Interludes in the movie acknowledge the shows devoted Gleeks by featuring three individuals who explain how Glee has changed their lives. One teenager with Asperger’s Syndrome discovered Brittany was her cure for daily anxieties and went as far as naming her pooch after the blond cheerleader. A gay student lived to tell the tale of peer humiliation by being publicly outed and now believes in full closet-less disclosure.

Glee’s widespread influence on its audience of all ages has spurred the creation of glee.wikia.com in case you want to brush up on your Glee facts or simply indulge in some Gleephilia.

Overall, the Glee movie manages to deliver all the key elements of an episode: the heart-warming tales of the triumphant underdog, finding love and support among those around you and belting out tunes without inhibition.

To top it off, you’ll get a double dose of Don’t Stop Believin (Journey) and one hit each of favourites Born This Way (Lady Gaga), Raise Your Glass (Pink), Firework (Katy Perry) and Teenage Dream (Katy Perry), among others.

* STARS: Cory Monteith, Dianna Agron and Lea Michele
