Spike TV Scream Awards nominees: 'Harry Potter,' 'X-Men: First Class,' lead with 14 nods each

The final 'Harry Potter' flick and 'X-Men: First Class' will be battling it out at the Scream Awards.

Gentlemen, start your special effects.

It's Harry Potter vs. the X-Men in Spike TV's sixth annual "Scream" awards, which honor the best TV and movie work in the horror, fantasy, sci-fi and comic book fields.

The now-retired boy wizard's "Deathly Hallows — Part 2"  and the Marvel gang's "X-Men: First Class" each scored 14 nominations in the awards, whose winners will be announced over Spike on Oct. 18, 9-11 p.m.

Both will be competing with eight other productions for the night's top award, the prestigious "Ultimate Scream."

Nominations are made by members of the Spike Advisory Board, including leading names in the sci-fi, horror, fantasy and comic book fields. This year that includes, among others, John Carpenter, Rob Zombie, Tim Burton and Wes Craven.

Winners will be determined by online voting at www.scream.spike.com.

"Ultimate Scream" nominees include "Black Swan," "Captain America: The First Avenger," "Game of Thrones," "Harry Potter," "Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World," "Super 8," "Thor," "True Blood," "The Walking Dead" and "X-Men: First Class."

A few other categories:

Best Science Fiction Movie: "Captain America," "Monsters," "Super 8," "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" and "Tron: Legacy."

Best Fantasy Movie: "Black Swan," "Harry Potter," "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," "Thor" and "X-Men."

Best Horror Movie: "I Saw the Devil," "Insidious," "Let Me In," "Paranormal Activity," "Piranha: 3D."

Best Thriller: "The Adjustment Bureau," "Hanna," "Limitless," "Red," "Salt."

Best TV Show: "Doctor Who," "Fringe," "Game of Thrones," "True Blood," "Walking Dead."

Kevin Bacon, nominated for Best Villain for his role in "X-Men: First Class," called it "a thrill.. . . I have a long-time love thing for movies that make me scream."
