Frickin' Eh Movie News: Be Happy Edition

News on the latest Avengers cast member, Amy Adams' and Viggo Mortensen's Superman casting updates, the competing Snow White projects heat up, the trailer for The Three Musketeers and more!

Well, things are looking up for me, I must say. Life has really taken an upswing and I'm excited to see what the future holds now. School's winding down, too, and with the final stretch here, I can't wait to be done. Maybe I'm a bit too excited . . . this is going to be a long two weeks. I'm sure I'll make it, though. Of course, I'm now running through an epic bout of indecision about what to do with my future, so I'm going to need some time to meditate on that – and unfortunately, time is in short supply. Oh well. Onto the news . . .

In a bit of a surprise over the weekend, the kid-friendly Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules beat out my guess for winner, taking in $24.4 million. Sucker Punch opened in a fairly close second with $19 million. Limitless fell from first to third with $15.2 million in its second week, while The Lincoln Lawyer stayed where it was in fourth with $11 million. Rango dropped from second to fifth with $9.8 million. Battle: Los Angeles fell from third to sixth, Paul from fifth to seventh, and Red Riding Hood fell from sixth to eighth. The Adjustment Bureau dropped from seventh to ninth, and Mars Needs Moms rounded out the top ten, making $2.2 million and dropping from eighth.

Variety says that Warner Bros. Pictures is developing a remake of the 1974 buddy comedy Uptown Saturday Night with Overbrook Entertainment. David Dobkin (Wedding Crashers, upcoming The Change-Up) is attached to direct and executive produce the movie, to be written by Tim Dowling (upcoming This Means War).

Overbrook partners Will Smith, James Lassiter, Ken Stovitz and Jada Pinkett Smith will produce.

The original was directed by Sidney Poitier and starred Bill Cosby and Poitier.

The new film will likely diverge from the original's storyline, and is being eyed as a starring vehicle for Will Smith and Denzel Washington.

I've never seen the original – actually, I don't know if I've even really ever heard of the original, to tell the truth – but with the man behind Wedding Crashers directing, and a solid cast led by Smith and Washington, I imagine this could be a fairly worthy remake. Of course, Denzel Washington in a buddy comedy sounds very out of place, but it is fun seeing some actors step out of their usual zone and try to do something completely different.

The Weinstein Company has confirmed to ComingSoon.net it's new calendar lineup, offering dates for two previously unscheduled films and updating two projects that have now had their release dates shifted.

Apollo 18, which was to open on April 22nd of this year, will now arrive on January 6, 2012. It is currently the only release scheduled for that day.

I Don't Know How She Does It now has its first release scheduled for September 16, 2011, opening opposite Drive, Johnny English Reborn and Straw Dogs.

Our Idiot Brother is set for August 26, 2011, opposite Final Destination 5.

Finally, Piranha 3DD moves from September 16th to November 23, 2011, facing off against Arthur Christmas, Hugo Cabret, The Muppets and Project X.

Nothing too major. Sure, we have to wait for Apollo 18 for a lot longer, but was anyone really waiting for that one anyway? The other two aren't bold movies or anything, and Piranha 3DD isn't something people are going to be lining up for anyway. The move is bold, going up against a lot of heavyweights and moving it into winter, but I could see it backfiring. We'll have to see.

CBS Films has plans to develop the romantic comedy Face It under producer McG and writers Amanda Harlib and Laura Sandler, the studio confirmed to ComingSoon.net.

McG will produce the ensemble, described as being in the vein of Shop Around the Corner and Love Actually, through his Wonderland Sound & Vision with Mary Viola and Michael Radutzky serving as executive producers.

Little is known about specific plot details, but the project is said to be about the many ways in which social networking has changed and is now shaping modern relationships.

Really, McG? Okay . . . Anyway. This isn't huge news, although CBS seems to be doing well enough with their venture into the film world. Give them a bit more time and they'll be competing with the big dogs. That said, as much as I don't like people who focus on and gravitate around social networking, I must admit that this has a certain draw to it in today's world, and it will be interesting to see if they can point a sharp enough critique at how things are done to maybe get some people to sit back and think about it.

Zap2it talked to Cobie Smulders ("How I Met Your Mother") about taking on the role of S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Maria Hill in Joss Whedon's The Avengers.

Smulders, who was Whedon's first choice for his shelved Wonder Woman feature, said that they "start in April, which is like... tomorrow. I literally leave here and I go to Albuquerque, New Mexico, to shoot some scenes in a catsuit."

She added that she has "tried on portions of the catsuit [and] I've seen conceptual drawings of what they want it to be. It's fascinating to me. I feel like wardrobe becomes very creative on these types of movies because they literally spend weeks designing just the pants or the emblem. It's such an all-consuming process, so I'm excited to see how it all turns out."

Smulders will be joined by the all-star cast of Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Clark Gregg, Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson and Mark Ruffalo in New Mexico. Walt Disney Pictures will release Marvel Studios' The Avengers on May 4, 2012.

Yeah, Smulders will fit in pretty well as an agent in The Avengers . She's shown a lot of range on How I Met Your Mother alone. I'm surprised to find that Whedon wanted her to play Wonder Woman, I guess he's got a lot of respect for her. This should be fantastic when we finally see it.

James Franco and Mila Kunis have officially joined Oz, the Great and Powerful, Walt Disney Pictures confirmed today to ComingSoon.net.

Both recently rumored to star, Kunis will play a witch, Theodora, and Franco the titular lead in the Sam Raimi film, a prequel to the 1939 The Wizard of Oz. Robert Downey Jr. was originally slated to play Franco's part (the Wizard from the original film, who winds up in Oz following a balloon accident) but he left the project a few months ago.

Kunis most recently appeared in Black Swan and is set to star in Seth MacFarlane's directorial debut, Ted opposite Mark Wahlberg.

Franco, meanwhile, is set for an eclectic schedule, starring in the upcoming Rise of the Apes and Your Highness, returning to "General Hospital" and teaching a ten week film class at Columbia College entitled "Editing James Franco... With James Franco." He is also slated to make his directorial debut with an adaptation of William Faulkner's "As I Lay Dying." He previously worked alongside Sam Raimi in the three "Spider-Man" films and with Kunis in Shawn Levy's Date Night.

This has been a popular rumour for a while so it's not much of a surprise. As I said back then, though, I don't know if Franco is the right choice for this. I think he'll be able to make it his own for sure – he is a very good actor, no doubt about it – but Robert Downey Jr. would have been such a perfect fit. Kunis is riding her high from Black Swan and fits pretty well as a witch. I look forward to seeing if Raimi can not ruin this.

The first trailer for Paul W.S. Anderson's The Three Musketeers has just been released through iTunes Movie Trailers and can be watched using the player below!

Opening in 3D on October 14, 2011, the action adventure Logan Lerman, Milla Jovovich, Matthew Macfadyen, Ray Stevenson, Luke Evans, Mads Mikkelson, Gabriella Wilde, Juno Temple, Orlando Bloom and Christoph Waltz in an adaptation of the classic Alexandre Dumas tale.

In The Three Musketeers, the hot-headed young D'Artagnan (Lerman) joins forces with three rogue Musketeers (MacFadyen, Evans and Stevenson). They must stop the evil Richlieu (Waltz) and face off with Buckingham (Bloom) and the treacherous Milady (Jovovich).

I must say, this looks pretty excellent, actually. While the cast isn't all big names like you might expect, they all look and act the parts perfectly, and the trailer actually has me quite excited with just how much action they've packed into this one. Check it out and see for yourself!

Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures announced today that Amy Adams will star in the coveted role of Lois Lane in the new Zack Snyder-directed Superman feature film.

Snyder remarked, "Second only to Superman himself, the question of who will play Lois Lane is arguably what fans have been most curious about. So we are excited to announce the casting of Amy Adams, one of the most versatile and respected actresses in films today. Amy has the talent to capture all of the qualities we love about Lois: smart, tough, funny, warm, ambitious and, of course, beautiful."

Amy Adams will star opposite Henry Cavill, who plays the new Clark Kent/Superman in the film. The main cast also includes Diane Lane and Kevin Costner, as Martha and Jonathan Kent.

Amy Adams was recently honored with her third Oscar nomination in five years, for her performance in the true-life drama The Fighter, with Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale. She previously earned Oscar nominations for her work in the acclaimed films Doubt and Junebug. She has also starred in such diverse hits as Enchanted, Julie & Julia, Charlie Wilson's War, and Catch Me If You Can. She will next be seen in Walter Salles' On the Road with Viggo Mortensen and The Muppets.

Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Deborah Snyder are the producers of the film. The screenplay is being written by David S. Goyer based on a story by Goyer and Nolan. Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips are serving as executive producers.

Superman is currently scheduled for release in December 2012.

I'm definitely okay with this casting. Amy Adams is a great actress and she's proven her worth time and time again. With a great range, being able to effectively do a serious role, and of course fitting the role fairly well physically, she should be a perfect fit inside the new Superman universe perfectly.

Relativity Media has closed a deal with The Social Network star Armie Hammer to play Prince Andrew Alcott in its upcoming untitled Snow White feature, based on the Brothers Grimm story, directed by Tarsem Singh (Immortals, The Cell).

Hammer join Julia Roberts who was previously announced in the role of the Queen. Pre-production has begun, and principal photography will start in May. The theatrical release date is set for June 29, 2012.

Relativity's "Snow White," a retelling of one of the most beloved fables of all-time, will eschew the traditional story in favor of a more modern tale full of comedy and adventure. After her evil stepmother kills her father and destroys the kingdom, Snow White bands together with a gang of seven quarrelsome dwarfs to reclaim what is rightly hers..

The film's producers are Ryan Kavanaugh (The Fighter), Bernie Goldmann (300) and Brett Ratner ("Rush Hour" franchise). The script was written by Melissa Wallack (Meet Bill) and Jason Keller (Machine Gun Preacher).

Huh. An interesting choice, although I suppose he's probably become popular with The Social Network and how well received that one was. His roles before that are few and far between, mostly television, so I hope he's up for this one, because it's definitely going to be outside his usual range. I don't know about Julia Roberts as the queen, either. This one has a bit too eclectic a cast for my taste.

The Hollywood Reporter says that Viggo Mortensen ("The Lord of the Rings") has broken off talks for him to star in Universal Pictures' Snow White and the Huntsman. He would have starred opposite Kristen Stewart ("The Twilight Saga") and Charlize Theron.

Commercials helmer Rupert Sanders is making his directorial debut on the film, which will feature Stewart as Snow White and Charlize Theron as the Evil Queen.

Mortensen was in talks to play the huntsman, though apparently the two sides were too far apart. During the negotiations, the actor flirted with playing the villain in Zack Snyder's new Superman movie, but it is not known if that will lead to anything at this point.

Snow White and the Huntsman is a new take on the classic fairy tale which features an expanded role for the Huntsman. In the fairy tale, he is ordered to take Snow White into the woods and kill her, but instead lets her go. In the new take, the Huntsman is not a love interest but acts more as a mentor, teaching Snow White to fight and survive.

Well, that's really too bad, I think Mortensen would have been a perfect fit and really given this film a huge boost. But he's got to do what he sees as best, and obviously this isn't it right now. But with Stewart and Theron still on board, it still has a lot of potential, and maybe Mortensen will actually become the villain for Superman - that would be something.

I have absolutely no idea how I managed to find this movie, just some random wandering and exploring through movies I suppose, and it looked mildly interesting. So this week I present:

The story is this. Someone finds a spaceship on the bottom of the ocean, and a specialized team is sent in to figure out what happened and possibly communicate with the aliens. Of course, things don't go as planned as they dig deeper, and soon they're watching out for their lives.

The story is flimsy at best. It starts out slightly coherent, and there are a couple good glimpses here and there that show legitimately good ideas and writing, but for the most part it's just kind of thrown together sci-fi, underwater storylines. The story takes a turn upward near the end as they begin to understand more about the sphere, but it remains too convoluted and never fully fleshed out, not to mention full of holes. The underwater setting makes the movie rather unexciting because, honestly, you can't have all that exciting of an action scene at the bottom of the ocean. Suspense is never really done well enough and overall, things largely fall flat.

Hoffman as Dr. Norman Goodman is a fairly good lead, but seems slightly out of place in the movie. I don't know what it is, but his character never seemed to fit one hundred percent. Stone as Dr. Halperin was alright as well, definitely the least important of the main characters – particularly at the beginning – but she's decent enough in the role. Jackson as Dr. Harry Adams is pretty good, an enjoyable role if not particularly original. Peter Coyote plays Captain Barnes, the head of the operation, but always is in the shadows and not particularly important. Liev Schreiber plays Dr. Ted Fielding and is probably my favourite of the bunch, with a relatively original character, plus he fits in well. Queen Latifah has a small, rather ridiculous role, too. Overall, average, although Jackson and Schreiber step things up a bit and Hoffman is serviceable.

When all is said and done, it's not that good of a movie. It's definitely not a standout and is too unoriginal to make it worth seeking. With a week story that had a lot of potential, and an underwater setting that never got used quite right, it was a bit of a letdown overall.

I'm on Flickr! - Check out some of my pictures, mostly film and Polaroid ones.

Cyanide & Happiness - A (usually) hilarious web comic.

Princess Auto - I have to plug the people who pay me, don't I?

Phone Scoop - The best site for information on cell phones that I've found.

Instructables - If you want to tinker or build just about anything, this is your site.

Hot Tracks - Like records? A great website for just about any vinyl record you could imagine, plus rare stuff, too.

Epic Meal Time - My roommate got me watching this. Some Canadian guys cook really disgusting but hilarious meals in about three minutes. What you know about cooking?

A coworker went and saw Sucker Punch on the weekend, and the feeling was that it was pretty good, if not amazing or super special. My roommate, on the other hand, just wants to get really, really high and go watch it. I'll wait to watch it on Blu-ray, I think. But until next week . . .
