Battle: Los Angeles

opened fairly strong in first place. Red Riding Hood from Warner Bros. ( TWX ) opened slightly lower than most industry expectations in third place while Disney’s ( DIS ) animated adventure film Mars Needs Moms tanked in fifth place. The box office should cool down this weekend with three new releases that should only perform moderately well. They are Limitless from Relativity Media, The Lincoln Lawyer from Lionsgate ( LGF ), and comedy Paul from Universal ( GE ).

Overall the top 10 generated an estimated $112.9 million, down 12.9% from 2010 when Disney’s Alice in Wonderland ruled the box office and pushed the overall top 10 to $129.6 million. Although the total for the top 10 films this weekend was down from 2010, the top 10 films were neck in neck with last weekend’s totals.

Battle: Los Angeles easily took the top spot on the charts grossing an estimated $36 million. This was a fairly strong start for the alien invasion flick and much better than I anticipated. This was the second biggest opening of the year behind last weekend’s champ, Paramount’s ( VIA ) Rango ($38.1 million). The reviews were fairly bad for Battle but a lack of any other action films released in the last few weeks helped propelthe film to hit territory. Although I expect the film to experience a big fall next weekend, it will more than likely claim the top spot once again as the new films' opening shouldn’t offer too much in the way of competition.

Warner Bros.' Red Riding Hood , a retelling of the classic fairy tale, opened short of most industry expectations, collecting an estimated $14.1 million for a third place finish. The reviews for the film were beyond terrible and certainly hurt the film's potential at the box office. Red was clearly aiming to bring in the Twilight audience as it was directed by Catherine Hardwicke, who helmed the first film in the popular vampire series. It seems that teenage girls aren’t as interested in werewolves as they are in good-looking vampires. Red Riding Hood is in for a rocky road over the next few weekends as its target audience has already come out to support the film. At this rate, the film will be lucky to collect $35 million before it exits theaters.

The final new release for the weekend was Disney’s animated adventure film Mars Needs Moms . It was obvious that the film was going to fail at the box office, but the estimated $6.8 million it collected was truly pitiful. The film reportedly cost over $150 million to produce making this weekend’s performance that much worse. With no support from the family audience, Mars Needs Moms will disappear from theaters very quickly and go down in history as one of the biggest box office bombs of all time. I guess there will not be a Mars Needs Moms ride at Disney World any time soon.
