‘Source Code,’ ‘Insidious pull good reviews, ‘Hop’ is a critical flop

What is it about sci-fi this year, and sci-fi romances in particular?

We’ve had “Adjustment Bureau,” not great but not bad at all, no matter if you saw the boom mike a few more times than you should. Then there was “Limitless,” which fell down in the romance department, a shortcoming in Bradley Cooper’s on screen arsenal.

And now there’s “Source Code,” which has heart and soul and tension and wit — not a great film, but another pretty good one in the only genre Hollywood seems to do well on a consistent basis. Good reviews across the board for this one. A must see for the weekend.

And James Wan and Leigh Whannell make their horror comeback with “Insidious,” a PG-13 rated ghostly possession tale straight out of “Poltergeist.” No more torture porn from the guys who perfected it with “Saw”? Let’s hope so. Decent reviews for this one, too.

If you glance at the tomatometer, you may think “Hop,” a charmless blend of animation and live action about a rock drumming Easter Bunny with the voice of Russell Brand, was the worst offense against children since “Yogi Bear.”

It isn’t. It’s not funny, or not particularly funny. It’s not in 3D, so the tickets won’t cost you that much. It’s not hateful. Just humorless. The metacritic meter is more on the mark - - no good, but not awful.

Orlando finally gets “Jane Eyre,” a more exciting take on the tale of Running away from Rochester and his “secret” than I expected.

We also get “The Last Lions,” a good guts and gore nature documentary from The National Geographic. It opens at the Enzian.

And “The Elephant in the Room,” about people who buy, sell and keep exotic predators, which sometimes escape or are released by the morons who own them — Burmese pythons in the Everglades anyone? It’s at the Plaza Cinema Cafe.
