Frickin' Eh Movie News: Fooled Edition

News on The Expendables 2 getting dated, Arnold Schwarzenegger unveiling The Governator , Snow White finding its star, the newest trailer for The Hangover Part II and more!

Well, spring finally appears to be here – thank goodness! We've still got several feet of snow just about everywhere but it's slowly starting to melt, the sun is coming out every once in a while, and for the first time this year I was able to drive with my window down without wearing a coat (not for long, granted, but it happened). With spring comes the end of university, the start of the big summer blockbusters, and a lot of change. Spring cleaning indeed this year. But let's get into the news:

Alright then, the champion of the past weekend? The animated feature Hop , which drew in a respectable $38.2 million. Source Code opened in a distant second with $15.1 million. Insidious opened in third with $13.5 million. Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules fell from the top to fourth with $10.2 million. Limitless dropped from third to fifth with $9.4 million. The Lincoln Lawyer fell from fourth to sixth, Sucker Punch took a steep dive into the deep end from second to seventh, and Rango dropped from fifth to eighth. Paul fell from sixth to ninth, and Battle: Los Angeles fell from seventh to tenth, making $3.5 million.

Lionsgate announced today an August 17, 2012 release date for The Expendables 2. The film currently has the slot to itself, with G.I. Joe 2 scheduled to hit theaters a week earlier on August 10.

Sylvester Stallone's first film earned an impressive $274.5 million worldwide on a budget of $80 million.

The original opened on a similar date - August 13, 2010.

Well, now we know exactly how long we have to wait for this one. And it's going to still be a bit of a wait, and a hard one, because I imagine the sequel will probably be a bigger, better, more polished production. Even though the first was good, I have really high hopes for Stallone and crew on this one, and I can't wait to see what they do with it.

Chloe Moretz is in talks to join Tim Burton's Dark Shadows at Warner Bros. Pictures, according to Deadline. Moretz will play Carolyn, the daughter of Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (Michelle Pfeiffer), the matriarch of the Collins clan at Collinwood.

The film is based on Dan Curtis' cult '60s supernatural TV show that ran from 1966 - 1971. "Dark Shadows" was a highly atmospheric, spooky soap-opera that featured gothic horror staples like vampires, monsters, witches, werewolves, ghosts and zombies.

Johnny Depp plays the lead role of vampire Barnabas Collins. Previously-announced cast members also include Eva Green as the witch Angelique, Jackie Earle Haley as conman Willie Loomis, Bella Heathcoate as Victoria Winters, the young governess of the Collins estate, Thomas McDonell as the young Barnabas Collins, and Helena Bonham Carter as Dr. Julia Hoffman, a specialist in psychology and rare blood disorders who moves into Collinwood.

Moretz's film credits include Kick-Ass, Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Let Me In. Her upcoming projects include The Fields, Movie 43, Hugo Cabret and Hick.

I've never heard of the show, although describing it as an atmospheric, spooky soap opera has me a bit worried. That said, the fact that it combines all the horror genres is a nice touch and as long as it's not too sappy, it could be quite unique. The cast is fantastic, too; the standards of Depp and Carter are there, Eva Green makes a great witch, and Haley has earned a lot of respect from me after his brilliant role in Human Target . Moretz should be alright – she did fine in Kick-Ass as much as I didn't like the movie, and she's a strong actress, so she should fit in with this cast well.

Variety is reporting that Ryan Reynolds (upcoming Green Lantern) is in final talks to voice DreamWorks Animation's Turbo.

Turbo, to be directed by David Soren from a script he wrote with Darren Lemke, tells the story of an ordinary garden snail with an impossible dream: to become the fastest snail in the world. When a freak accident gives him extraordinary speed, Turbo sets out to try to make this dream come true.

Lisa Stewart (Monsters vs. Aliens) is producing the film, which is scheduled to hit theaters on June 7, 2013.

Say what you will about DreamWorks, they have some fun ideas. And this is definitely a good one. A super-fast snail? Come on. It's gold. With Reynolds voicing it, this could be an awesome kids movie. Reynolds has a distinct voice and a great sense of humour, and he'll fit this perfectly. Even I want to see what this one turns in to.

Will Beall (ABC's "Castle") is in negotiations to write the script for Warner Bros Pictures' Logan's Run, says Heat Vision. Beall's Gangster Squad just received the green light at the studio as well.

Nicolas Winding Refn is attached to direct Logan's Run with Ryan Gosling starring. Joel Silver and Akiva Goldsman are producing.

The 1976 original starred Michael York, Jenny Agutter and Farrah Fawcett. It was based on a 1967 novel by William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson. The premise sees a future society that demands the death of everyone upon reaching a certain age. Anyone who veers from that destiny is dubbed a "runner" and is hunted by operatives known as Sandmen. Logan is a Sandman who is forced to go on the run.

Alex Garland wrote the previous draft of the new film.

Despite the fact that Beall's only credited project is writing for Castle so far, I know that show is highly regarded, not just in acting quality but for having great writing, so he's a good choice. It will be a difficult task for him, to be sure, but I'm sure he's up for the challenge. Gosling starring in this is a bit of an interesting choice, but I suppose I can see it. I have to remember that he's not just a chick flick star, he's actually quite a talented actor. Let's hope they come up with something worthwhile.

Warner Bros Pictures has revealed the new trailer for director Todd Phillips' The Hangover Part II, hitting theaters on May 26. The highly-anticipated follow-up stars Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis, Jeffrey Tambor, Mike Tyson, Justin Bartha, Ken Jeong, Liam Neeson and Bryan Callen.

In The Hangover Part II, Phil (Cooper), Stu (Helms), Alan (Galifianakis) and Doug (Bartha) travel to exotic Thailand for Stu's wedding. After the unforgettable bachelor party in Las Vegas, Stu is taking no chances and has opted for a safe, subdued pre-wedding brunch. However, things don't always go as planned. What happens in Vegas may stay in Vegas, but what happens in Bangkok can't even be imagined.

Well, here we finally have a real look at what the movie is going to be. And what does it look like? Well . . . like a redo of the first. The formula looks to be almost identical, almost the same story, similar dynamic, just with new jokes, a new place, and presumably Phillips will be willing to go even farther this time. And what does all that mean? That this is probably going to be a truly worthy sequel to the original. Check out the trailer and see for yourself.

Since Arnold Schwarzenegger left public office, he's mentioned a few movie projects that he might be interested, but there's been no mention of True Lies 2.

When asked previously by The Arnold Fans what scripts he was considering as his comeback film, he said, "Well, first of all it's more like fifteen scripts that have been sent to me after people had found out that I have been interested again in doing films, so I don't want to bore anyone to go through those things but there are the obvious ones from 'The Terminator' scripts to remakes of 'Predator' and 'The Running Man' and all of those things."

Tom Arnold meanwhile has been making claims that there's a True Lies 2 script to the press, but Schwarzenegger addressed the possible sequel in the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly.

"The idea of a 'True Lies' sequel has been around since the early 2000s, but then 9/11 happened and we didn't do it because it had to do with a terrorist attack. A lot of terrorist-type scripts were cancelled back then, but now they are emerging again because there hasn't been a terrorist attack in the last 10 years. Then, of course, there's dialogue about me getting back into the Terminator thing. But you know, I've been out of office only two months now. I couldn't be thinking about doing 'Terminator 16' while I was still governor."

His quote above about "Terminator" sure is interesting. And what did he say about possibly reteaming with James Cameron on a film?

"Could be." Short and sweet.

What movie do you think Arnold should make next?

Maybe crushing the rumour is a little too bold. But it sure seems like he's not planning on doing True Lies 2 anytime soon, whether it's in the works or not. And you'd think they could have come up with another story, one that didn't involve terrorism, if they'd really wanted to make a sequel. I don't know, we'll just have to see. I don't know if I hope he returns to the Terminator franchise or not. I'm not sure where he would fit in the new world created after Salvation , unless they actually follow through with the ridiculous idea of muddling with time travel again. And I wouldn't be surprised if Cameron and Arnold reteamed, but on what, I don't know. My two cents? I'd like to see him do The Expendables 2 as a nemesis of Stallone, or even the villain.

Lily Collins revealed to ComingSoon.net tonight at WonderCon that she will star in Tarsem Singh's Untitled Snow White Project at Relativity Media.

"Yes, I just got cast tonight," she told us.

Collins will star opposite Armie Hammer (The Social Network) who will play Prince Andrew Alcott and Oscar-winner Julia Roberts who will play the Queen. Pre-production has begun, and principal photography will start in May. The theatrical release date is set for June 29, 2012.

The film will eschew the traditional story in favor of a more modern tale full of comedy and adventure. After her evil stepmother kills her father and destroys the kingdom, Snow White bands together with a gang of seven quarrelsome dwarfs to reclaim what is rightly hers.

The film's producers are Ryan Kavanaugh (The Fighter), Bernie Goldmann (300) and Brett Ratner ("Rush Hour" franchise). The script was written by Melissa Wallack (Meet Bill) and Jason Keller (Machine Gun Preacher).

Collins, the daughter of Grammy-winning artist Phil Collins and who starred in The Blind Side, can next be seen on the big screen in Priest and Abduction. She will head into production on Screen Gems' The Mortal Instruments, in which she will play the lead role of Clary Fray, after wrapping "Snow White."

I haven't seen Collins in anything, but her involvement in The Blind Side is a feather in her cap. It seems like she's pretty good, and she looks about right for the role. Then again, this seems like it will be a bit harder, darker Snow White , so maybe she looks a little too young and innocent. I hope the only thing they mean by modernizing is that the story will change slightly, not the time or setting or basic layout. Hopefully this turns out to be a good choice.

CineWebradio and Deadline report that Arnold Schwarzenegger announced at MIPTV today in Cannes that in addition to an animated series and comic book, The Governator will become a 3D feature film as well. The former California Governor said the movie will be ready in early 2013.

"The Governator" will kick-off with a 52-episode animated series that will feature the voice and image of Schwarzenegger. The series is expected to launch in late 2012.

"The Governator" will have internet programming as well.

I just don't see this being a success in any way. How is it going to be funny? Anyway, the joke is so old, I haven't heard anybody say the word "Governator" in years. Something about this just makes me think Arnold needs to step back and rejoin an old franchise or a new, familiar project, rather than going with something like this. But we'll just have to see, I guess. Maybe it will turn out to be solid gold.

Summit Entertainment has pushed back the release date for Timur Bekmambetov-produced sci-fi action-thriller The Darkest Hour from August 5 to December 23.

The Chris Gorak-directed film is the story of five young people who find themselves stranded in Moscow, fighting to survive in the wake of a devastating alien attack.

The 3D release stars Emile Hirsch, Olivia Thirlby, Max Minghella, Rachael Taylor and Joel Kinnaman.

The move isn't too bad – four months, while still a long time, isn't bad compared to the moves some other movies make. And as always, hopefully this is to deliver some extra polish rather than to exploit the Christmas crowd. August isn't a bad release date either, so hopefully it's a legitimate reason. I'm still not convinced of how good this is going to be anyway, so I'm not devastated, but we'll have to wait and see.

I told someone that I'd never seen this movie so it was immediately insisted that I had to watch it. I didn't realize how new of a movie it was – for some reason, I thought it was older than 2005. But anyway, this week I present:

An old football star, kicked out of the NFL, goes to prison after getting drunk and stealing his girlfriend's car. Once he's there, he finds that the warden is a football fan and wants him to lead a team of inmates to play the guards. After initially refusing, he agrees and whips the team in shape, partly to make this life easier, but partly to redeem himself and do the right thing.

Now that might sound sappy, and actually on the ground the story does have a bit of that to it. It is Paul Crewe's (Sandler) redemption tale, but that's far from the most important thing of the movie. It's a comedy, and a football comedy. The team put together is obviously a ragtag bunch, and much fun is had at the shortcomings of the team. There are some good sports movie clichés thrown in there to make fun of them, but overall, it's just some really good jokes fired off as the team shapes up. In the end it turns out to almost look like a real sports movie, and it's a nice show, I must say.

Sandler, besides being mildly unbelievable as a star football player, is a perfect lead, with his dry jokes and fairly serious attitude. Rock is a great second, much more upfront and hilarious than Sandler, and he actually has a lot of great jokes. Chris Rock and Adam Sandler end up having a great chemistry, too, which is nice to see. Reynolds as the coach is a nice touch, a throwback to an old era, but funny in his own right, too. Of the rest of the cast, everyone has their high points, and the entire team is put together well, with some characters being a lot funnier than others. Nelly as Megget, for example, isn't that great; but Terry Crews as Cheeseburger Eddy was probably one of my favourite characters. Seeing Tracy Morgan as a cross-dressing cheerleader was just hilarious, too. An excellent cast, all in all.

I actually really enjoyed this one, despite not being a fan of sports movies or comedies. They truly combined the genres together perfectly and made something really enjoyable and worthwhile.

I'm on Flickr! - Check out some of my pictures, mostly film and Polaroid ones.

Cyanide & Happiness - A (usually) hilarious web comic.

Princess Auto - I have to plug the people who pay me, don't I?

Phone Scoop - The best site for information on cell phones that I've found.

Instructables - If you want to tinker or build just about anything, this is your site.

Hot Tracks - Like records? A great website for just about any vinyl record you could imagine, plus rare stuff, too.

Epic Meal Time - My roommate got me watching this. Some Canadian guys cook really disgusting but hilarious meals in about three minutes. What you know about cooking?

Two weeks! Well, only a week of classes and then two exams. Which is exciting as all else. I still have two papers to write, which is depressing, but other than that, I'm all set. Anyway, until next week . . .
