Carroll Movie Guide

"Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules" (PG). So-so sequel in which two brothers work through their sibling squabbles. This family comedy has its mildly amusing moments, but the plot is slight and slack. Grade: C+ TownMall Cinemas (1:20, 4:20, 7 p.m.)

"Hop" (PG). Not reviewed. Russell Brand stars in this kid's comedy as the son of the Easter Bunny who forsakes the family business to pursue a dream of being a drummer. TownMall Cinemas (12:45, 3:45, 6:45 p.m.)

Insidious" (PG-13). Not reviewed. A family tries to prevent evil spirits from threatening their comatose child. TownMall Cinemas (1:50, 4:10, 7:25 p.m.)

"Limitless" (PG-13). Bradley Cooper plays a New York writer whose writer's block is cured by a mysterious new drug that also gives him all sorts of additional extraordinary mental powers. The witty tone makes it easy to excuse the choppy storytelling and borderline-ridiculous developments. With Robert De Niro, Abbie Cornish and Anna Friel. Grade: B TownMall Cinemas (1:30, 4:30, 7:20 p.m.)

"The Lincoln Lawyer" (R). Matthew McConaughey has never been taken seriously as an actor, but he has a potentially career-transforming role as a sleazy Los Angeles lawyer whose devious client (Ryan Phillippe) makes him look like a saint by comparison. The plot complications are enjoyable to follow, and McConaughey's fine performance is complemented by such impressive supporting players as Marisa Tomei, Frances Fisher, Michael Pare, William H. Macy and John Leguizamo. Grade: B+ TownMall Cinemas (1:10, 3:50, 6:50 p.m.)

"Paul" (R). The laughs soon wear thin in this extraterrestrial comedy about two UFO-obsessed British guys (Simon Pegg and Nick Frost) whose road trip through the American Southwest brings them into contact with a pop culture-savvy alien creature (voiced by Seth Rogen). The satirical targets are obvious and the overall tone seems lazy, but some of the jokes score. Grade: C+ TownMall Cinemas (1:45, 4:50, 7:40 p.m.)

"Rango" (PG). Johnny Depp provides the voice for a very unconventional upholder of the law in this animated riff on spaghetti westerns. The story meanders and goes on too long, but there are clever bits along the way. Grade: B TownMall Cinemas (1, 3:40, 6:40 p.m.)

"Source Code (PG-13). Not reviewed. This action drama stars Jake Gyllenhaal as a man who finds he can cross over into the last minutes of another man's life because of a government experiment. TownMall Cinemas (1:15, 4, 7:10 p.m.)

"Sucker Punch" (PG-13). Director and co-writer Zack Snyder ("300," "Watchmen") desperately wants this to be a cult favorite, but instead it only seems desperate. A young woman named Babydoll (Emily Browning) is committed to a gothic-looking New England mental hospital, where the only treatment is sadistic. Reality and nightmare soon melt into each other in what turns out to be a bad trip for all. Grade: D TownMall Cinemas (1:40, 4:40, 7:30 p.m.)
