Dorothy Richardson, acting superintendent for the Tuscaloosa City School System, and Frank Costanzo, superintendent of the Tuscaloosa County School System, will keynote the sixth annual State of the Schools at 7:30 a.m. Thursday at at Hotel Capstone.

The event is presented by the Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama and sponsored by Lewis-Smyth-Winter and Jim Walter Resources Inc.

There is no charge for the event, but reservations are requested. A breakfast buffet will be available. To register, email carolyn@tuscaloosachamber.com or call 205-391-0556 by Monday.

-- The Commerce and Information Technology Advisory Committee hosted a schoolwide resume fair on March 31. Probate Judge Hardy McCollum, Chris Hope (Nucor Steel), Steve Webb (Tuscaloosa County Juvenile System), Ken Lawson (DCH), Helen Sides (Shelton State), Katherine Huffman (UA student), Debra Robinson (David E. Robinson, CPA), and Sandra Tittle (retired educator) critiqued resumes and discussed interviewing in 10-minute individual appointments with about 70 students. Spanish-speaking students had the opportunity to converse in Spanish about job hunting, resumes and interviews since Huffman is bilingual.

-- The Commerce and Information Technology Advisory Committee finalized criteria for the Sandra F. Tittle scholarship, which will be awarded to one senior Future Business Leaders of America member at the upcoming awards day. The recipient will be selected from this year’s Future Business Leaders of America Members of the Month. Applications will be due to Katherine Huffman by April 20.

-- Ambassadors and the Ironton chapter of National Honor Society sponsored a variety show on March 25 to generate scholarship money. Cody Frederick, Cody Hodo and Brantley Porter served on the setup committee. Performers included Holt High School students Tyler Gilkey, Cody Conway, Lindsey LaGrone, Jaquarious Washington, Kymonique Driver, Trista Harrell, Shakiya Wynn, Keyanna Prince, D’Andre Jolley; PRIDE members Tyler Merriweather, Jazlyn Wilder, Tashareka Taylor, Cor’deja Wilder and Dexavia Turner; Northport Kappa League members A.J. Bester and Jamichael Burns; and the Crowd Pleasers Band. Judy Watkins and Rachel Borne-McCool are club sponsors.

-- Professional photographer Barry Fikes spoke to multimedia design and publications students on March 22. Fikes introduced students to digital photography terminology and illustrated Adobe Photoshop techniques. Students later took photographs for electronic book reports on Andy Andrews’ audiobook “The Noticer.” LaDonna Beck is the Commerce and Information Technology Teacher for multimedia.

-- Future Business Leaders of America member Brittany Mullenix and sponsor LaDonna Beck attended the March 25 Chamber in Session held at Indian Hills Country Club where Gov. Robert Bentley discussed the state of Alabama’s economy. Mullenix thanked Bentley, state Sen. Gerald Allen, Probate Judge Hardy McCollum and Mayor Walt Maddox on behalf of Holt High School.

-- Holt High School juniors Kaylor Lott, Raven Samuel and Dexavia Turner attended an orientation session for the 2012 Tuscaloosa County Distinguished Young Woman program, formerly known as Tuscaloosa County Junior Miss. The scholarship program event will be at 6 p.m. Aug. 28 at the Bama Theatre, 600 Greensboro Ave.

-- Holt High School Commerce and Information Technology students Alvin Bester, Shakaiya Blackmon, Jamesha Hinton, Tyler Merriweather and Dexavia Turner attended the 2010-11 Accounting Career Awareness program at the University of Alabama. The Alabama chapter of the National Association of Black Accountants Inc., Alabama Power, UA and the Alabama Society of Certified Public Accountants sponsored the program, which was held in July 2010.

Dexavia Turner received a $1,000 scholarship for the group case study.

Current Holt High School sophomores and juniors are applying for the 2011-12 program to be held in July. Commerce and Information Technology teacher Robbie Pressley teaches accounting and Charlene Hamilton is counselor assisting students with the application process.

The fourth-graders at Tuscaloosa Magnet School performed two plays about Alabama History on the steps of the Tuscaloosa State Capitol in Capitol Park on Saturday.

The first of the plays was called “What’s so Special about Alabama?” The play featured portrayals of historical figures from Alabama’s past.

The second play, “Make Up Your Minds,” explained the state’s journey to statehood.

Tuscaloosa Magnet School students worked on this project in their Global Studies Enrichment classes since the beginning of the semester.

James Niiler, a seventh-grader at Rock Quarry Middle School, finished third at the state geographic bee at Samford University held April 1.

Niiler, son of Sandy and Luke Niiler, received a digital set of National Geographic magazine issues dating to 1888, and a $50 cash prize. This was a repeat appearance at the state event for Niiler, who finished in first place in 2010.

World Heritage Student Exchange Programs is looking for American families to host high school students from Russia, Ukraine, Moldova, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan. All these students have received scholarships through the U.S. State Department sponsored Future Leaders Exchange Program Program and will spend an academic year in the U.S.

Azeeza Abdulrauf, an eighth-grade band member, received a full-tuition scholarship from the University of Alabama’s Crimson Music Camp, to be held in June. She was awarded this honor at the All-American Cities Honor Band. A total of 37 band members from Hillcrest Middle were members of this band. March Students of the Month have been named at Northside Middle. They are are Michael West, sixth grade, Caitlyn Hall, eighth grade, and Christian Sargent, seventh grade.

The Northridge High School All-Academic Team consists of students who have scored 30 or higher on the ACT. Five new students have recently been added to this team. They are: Zoe Bakker, Cammie Cook, Steven Givhan, Alexandra Smith and Mary Caitlin Wilhite.

-- Northridge High School will host the 2011 Druid City Art Show for secondary students at the Junior League Gallery from April 5-28. Works will be from students in the Tuscaloosa City School System.

-- Northridge students Jimmy Hill, Jack Hubner and Davis Stroud have been selected to participate in the Alabama All-State band. These students will participate in these festivities in Mobile on Thursday through Saturday.

-- Cathy Randall announced that Morgan Terry, a senior at Northridge High School, received the $1,000 Annette Randall Spigener scholarship established by the Randall family to honor dependents of full-time Randall Publishing Co. employees (1934-2004) who have exhibited outstanding character, academics and community service and choose to further their education at the University of Alabama. Morgan is the daughter of Donna Terry and Gregg Terry of Tuscaloosa.

Kaija Lazda of Tuscaloosa, a senior at the Alabama School of Math and Science in Mobile, earned a 4.0 average during the last term. She plans to attend Agnes Scott College in Georgia.

Seven band members participated in the All-American Cities Honor Band. They are: Abigail Long and Brooke Allen, flute; Kelsey Skurka and Celena Miller, clarinet; Jonathan Daly, alto saxophone; Cole Laczynski, tenor saxophone; and Josh Barnhardt, trumpet.

The Tuscaloosa Sister Cities Commission announced the winners of the 2011 Sakura Art Contest. There were more than 100 entries from the Tuscaloosa City School System and Narashino, Japan. The theme of the contest was “Shaping Your Community for a Green World.”

-- Renita E. Daniels of Tuscaloosa, student at Tuscaloosa Academy, has been selected as the winner of a National Achievement $2,500 Scholarship. The NAS program is conducted by National Merit Scholarship Corp., and this scholarship is underwritten by NMSC with its own funds.

-- North River Christian Academy is accepting applications for the 2011-12 academic year. Registration will continue throughout the spring semester, and parents are encouraged to register their students as soon as possible to ensure a space. -- The North River Christian Academy varsity boys basketball team won the Alabama Christian Education Association State Basketball Championship on Feb. 19 at the ACES State Basketball Tournament at the Oxford Civic Center in Oxford. The NRCA basketball team completed a perfect 25-0 season for the first time by winning the state championship game against Tabernacle Christian on Feb. 19.

-- NRCA 2011 juniors and seniors who qualified academically took a College Bound Tour of the University of West Alabama and Shelton State Community College on Feb. 22. Students were acquainted with the college campuses and given a presentation on admissions standards, scholarship and financial aid qualifications, and general campus information during the annual visits to both campuses. Tuscaloosa Home Educators high school juniors and seniors enrolled in the NRCA Guidance Program also participated in the annual NRCA campus tours.

-- North River Christian Academy hosted the ACSI District Spelling Bee on Feb. 23. Winners were selected in each age division at the completion of the competition. NRCA students receiving awards given out at the completion of the competition were first-graders Kacyn Kelly, fourth place, and Jeremiah Lowther, third place. Also receiving awards were fifth-grader Katelyn Burkhalter, fourth place.

-- ABC 33/40 Chief Meteorologist James Spann spoke to the NRCA student body during their weekly Chapel program on Feb. 24. Spann talked in depth about weather forecasting and phenomenon, and about his Christian faith and how it has impacted his life.

-- NRCA held the 2011 NRCA Beauty Walk on Feb. 25 in the school gymnasium. Categories included preschool students through high school seniors, and winners were announced in each age division at the conclusion of the pageant.

-- North River Christian Academy participated in the 2011 ACEA Math Olympics held at Cornerstone Christian in Columbiana on March 4. NRCA students placing in the statewide competition included fourth-graders Caroline Boswell placing fourth in Computation, and Emily Wallace, placing fifth in Reasoning. Also placing in the ACEA state math competition were NRCA seventh-grade students Taylor Stroup placing fourth in Computation, Joseph Seale placing first in Computation, and Mary Rose Cummings placing third in Reasoning.

-- NRCA sixth- through eighth-grade students spent the week of March 7-11, in Washington, D.C., touring historical landmarks and meeting with government officials. Students, parents and NRCA faculty members visited the Washington Memorial, Capitol Building, White House, Pentagon, Holocaust Museum, and Mount Vernon and Arlington National Cemetery while visiting the nation’s capitol.

-- NRCA varsity and JV cheerleaders held a pancake breakfast at the school on March 26 to raise funds for the summer cheerleading camp attended annually by the NRCA cheerleaders. All funds received will go to help defray expenses for the NRCA cheerleaders to attend the summer camp.

-- North River Christian Academy high school students who qualified academically toured the Samford University campus in Birmingham on March 30. Students were given a guided tour of the campus, met with admissions officials to discuss admission standards and scholarship/financial aid availability, and spent several hours familiarizing themselves with the SU campus. Tuscaloosa Home Educators juniors and seniors enrolled in the NRCA Guidance Program also participated in the SU tour. The annual Samford University tour is part of the NRCA College Bound Program, organized by the North River Guidance Department for students in grades 9-12.

-- The following events have been planned at Verner as part of the grants received from the Alabama Wildlife Federation and the Tuscaloosa Resource Conservation and Development Council to make the courtyard an outdoor learning center. Doyle Keasel from Alabama Wildlife Federation will conduct docent training for the library courtyard butterfly garden from 1-2:30 p.m. on Monday. Interested participants can contact the school office.

A drip irrigation system workshop will be held at the library courtyard butterfly garden from 4:00-5:30 p.m. on Thursday. Master Gardeners and Tuscaloosa Gardening Network members will be invited as well as other interested participants.

-- Verner’s fifth-grade math classes came in 14th in the top 25 on the AL/MS/LA Math League contest for sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders. Cole Stewart placed 12th in the top 25 students in the region.

-- Six Verner Elementary teachers received grants for instructional materials from the Tuscaloosa City Schools Foundation. Verner Kindergarten teacher Louisa Marchant received the first WVUA Featured Teacher Award in February, 2011. She was surprised with a gift card from Learning Experiences.

-- The Tuscaloosa Magnet School math team finished in second place out of 16 teams at the Berry-Simmons Middle School Math Tournament in Hoover on April 2. Michael Yu placed second out of 97 students and William Arnold placed eighth. The Central High School track team traveled to Mississippi State University in Starkville, Miss., on April 2, to participate in the Bulldog Relays. Students in his class work on various design projects throughout the year and will use the posters for inspiration and design education. Will Davis’ Science 7 and Global Studies classes made 724 origami cranes to raise $1,448 to help with the rebuilding of Japan. Through the partnership of studentsrebuild.org and dosomething.org, for every paper crane that is sent in, they will donate $2 toward Architecture for Humanity’s reconstruction efforts in Japan.Cranes are sacred creatures in Japanese culture. According to legend, anyone who
