Luther Star Ruth Wilson In Talks For Female Lead In The Lone Ranger

There are few better ways to break on to the film stage than by starring as the female lead in a Johnny Depp movie. Pretty much every movie he stars in finds a mass audience, either domestically or internationally. Basically, I have fantastic news if you are a British actress named Ruth Wilson.

Deadline has learned that Wilson, who stars as Alice Morgan on the Idris Elba television show Luther , is currently in talks to star alongside Armie Hammer - as the masked hero - and Depp - as his sidekick, Tonto - in Disney's The Lone Ranger . The film is set to be directed by original Pirates of the Caribbean helmer Gore Verbinski and is currently scheduled with a December 21, 2012 release date where it will compete with Peter Jackson's The Hobbit , Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained , Ang Lee's The Life Of Pi and, possibly, J.J. Abrams' Star Trek and Zack Snyder's Man of Steel . While details about the character are slim, it's known that Wilson will be playing a character named Rebecca. The actress won the role over two fairly big up-and-comers, including Tree of Life 's Jessica Chastain and Limitless ' Abbie Cornish.

I'm sadly not as up on British television as I perhaps should be so I don't know too much about Ruth Wilson, but this could be a real game changer for her career. Up until now she's largely stuck with television, before Luther having starred in the TV remake of The Prisoner with James Caviezel and Ian McKellen, Suburban Shootout and a four-part Jane Eyre series that earned her a Golden Globe nomination. Unless negotiations fall through, The Lone Ranger will be her first feature film.
